This is the back where all is visible. And here's a close-up view of the stitching, folded and fused to the backing.
Now that this piece is going to its new owner, I asked the recipient if she would prefer to leave the quilting on the back visible, or would she like the back covered with fabric, fused into place, invisible from the front. Keep in mind that this piece is entirely fused already.
Which would you prefer?
When it comes to art quilts, the old rules are out the window and I especially like moving the quilt from function to art and finishing it as neatly as possible.
I think being able to see the quilting on the back is part of the wonder and fun. Sometimes when I see the quilting on the back of a quilt it leads me to see something I missed on the front.
ReplyDeleteOh Melody, as beautiful as this is, I would be uncomfortably aware of the unfinished back. Though invisible, it would cry out to me every time my eye came in contact with its lovely face. This is coming from a person called "Miss Perfect" by her mother and sister. This name was not meant as a compliment. I vote for a finished back.
ReplyDeleteNow THAT is easy! And neat & tidy. As much as I like to see cool stitching on the back (and for some, that's nice), I'd cover it because then I don't have to stress over finishing off the knots or leaving a few messy threads. (Art quilts are about the art on the front, right??) Would you use a raw edge for the fused back or turn under a little finished edge before fusing? Fuse the whole back or just around the edges? I like this better than the escape hatch - I've found them hard to get the edge to stay turned under and not have the back more rumply than I'd like. Thanks again for sharing this, Melody!
