Peppermintoes

The Pattern

The final sample is finished and the pattern is ready to test. This sock is knit from the toe up with an afterthought heel, made like a toe in a top down sock. No wrapped stitches, ribbing, or measuring. Easy to try on as you go for a perfect fit.

The toe is actually a two sided diamond, and is the first section to knit. The second diamond stitches are picked up and knit along the edge of one side of the toe. The third diamond is knit from picked up stitches on the alternate side. #4 and #5 diamonds are then picked up between the second and third diamonds. Diamonds are based on 29 stitches each ( with the exception of the instep and cuff diamonds). For larger or smaller sizes increase or decrease the number of stitches which will in turn make more or fewer rows per diamond. Make the toe and the next four diamonds and try on the sock to insure a proper fit.

Pattern
Yarn: Mini-Mochi Superwash sock yarn and hand dyed sock yarn (lighter pink)
Needles: 5 dpns size 1.5US (2.5mm)
Foot size: a dainty 7.5 (38 European)
Diamond (29stitches) measures 3" on point

Toe: In the model two yarns were used alternating two rows each.
Using a provisonal crochet cast on 29 stitches through the back of the chain loops, and make a mitered diamond, slipping first stitch of every row, knitting every row (garter stitch). On all Right side rows: Decrease over the center three stitches as follows: slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over. Continue to decrease on every right side row until three stitches remain, make the same decrease, cut yarn and fasten off.
Carefully unzip crochet chain and pick up 29 live stitches and make a mitered diamond (as above) to complete the toe, fastening off yarn after final decreases. If this is confusing see my Mitered Mittens pattern .

Stitches were increased from 29 to 33 for the diamonds pictured below because those areas of the sock need more stretch. ( I also switched to size 3 needles, for those diamonds only, to make looser stitches ). Pick up the extra stitches evenly along the edges of the previous diamonds, and return to 29 stitches on the following diamonds.

The heel is knit afterward and space is left open. . This is the inside view of the sock. The larger front (instep) diamond is shown here The two diamonds above the center diamond are formed differently. The left hand (right side facing): pick up 15 stitches from previous diamond and cast on 14 stitches to make diamond. The right hand diamond (still right side facing): Cast on 14 stitches and pick up 15 stitches from edge of previous diamond.
To make the next diamond and continue the back of the leg of the sock pick up stitches from the upper sides of the last two diamonds. This will form a tube again, leaving a diamond shaped hole for the heel.

Continue making diamonds (trying on for fit) and end with the larger diamonds (33sts) on the front and the back, leaving the sides open.
These triangles are knit as follows: Row 1:Pick up and knit 17 stitches along left edge of back diamond. At the end of first row pick up one stitch from the edge of front diamond, turn.
Row 2: (wrong side) K the next stitch and pass slipped stitch over that knit stitch. Knit to within last three stitches, k2tog, k1.
Row 3: Slip first stitch and knit to end of row. Pick up one stitch from edge of the front diamond, turn.
Row 4: (wrong side) K the next stitch and pass slipped stitch over that knit stitch. Knit to within last three stitches, k2tog, k1.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until one stitch remains. Do not cut yarn, but continue to repeat this triangle on the remaining space. The top edge is finished, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
Afterthought heel: Decreases are made at the beginning and end of the needles on either side of the front diamond. See picture of heel above. Pick up 60-62 stitches evenly along all four sides of heel opening. Divide stitches among four needles (15 or 16 stitches each). With fifth needle knit one round.
Round 2: Knit around heel to within three stitches at the end of the fourth needle, k2tog, k1. Then on first needle, k1, slip next two stitches as if to knit and k2tog, knit to end of needle. Second needle: knit to within three stitches of the end, k2tog, k1. Third needle, k1, k2tog, knit to the end.
Round 3: Knit.
Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until five stitches are left on each of the four needles (20 stitches) Move stitches to two needles and graft remaining stitches. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Email me with questions and please let me know any mistakes I may have made in the pattern.

      Deb;

These socks ARE gorgeous aren't they? I very much want to knit them too.
But I only have 4 double pointed needles (of any size). Five needles in a packet are not often seen around here - at least not where I do my shopping.
Guess I will have to go hog-wild and buy two sets of the same size dpns, won't I?

      Happy knitting,
