Marking / Not Marking

When it comes to machine quilting, I don't like to mark the pattern on my fabric because then I would have to follow the lines, and later remove the lines. So instead, I use a sliver of soap to put down a boundary line, which I leave open, and just quilt next to it.
I've boosted the contrast on the following samples so that the quilted lines are more visible.
The designs are sorta like rocking back and forth and echoing what was previously stitched. It's a practice thing. I don't use any tools, or gloves, just my hands. Holding the fabric with one hand and guiding with the other.
++++
I got my sewing machine back from the repair guy, and it was a matter of being totally clogged up with unreachable lint. I mean I couldn't get it out without taking apart the machine. $218 to fix it! Maybe next time I will take it apart myself.

 This second picture is what the unboosted color actually is. Harder to see, but more realistic.

  1. We have a really great sewing machine guy here who does a wonderful job, as long as I get my machine in there once in awhile! I don't sew nearly as much as many, so it only goes in about once a year. But I have trained myself to use one of those gas duster cans to blow away lint every time I change or refill the bobbin. Love your stitching, BTW!

  2. Hey Melody,

    As always - gorgeous!! Is your soap mark visible in the photos? I can't find it and thought if you pointed it out...
    Thanks for sharing all that you do.

  3. I love how you have quilted this. I'm going to try that soap method. Maybe it will help me to be more brave. Thanks for sharing.

    Is one type of soap better for marking than another? I have never tried soap before. Do you have to wash it out? Thanks for sharing all your helpful hints.

  5. White soap is recommended and no I don't wash it out, I spritz the quilt with water and press it with a hot iron and the soap line disappears.
    I think this soap sliver is from Dove. But any soap will do.
