A New Palette Wrap-up

A New Palette
Hand dyed cotton,
machine pieced and machine quilted as you go.
67x41"
The solution to my dilemma actually improved the overall design, imho. I made a panel of strips and solids 9.5" wide by 43" long, quilted it and then divided it into four equal widths and inserted them with narrow connecting strips on either side of the central panel and at both ends of the composition. I haven't added binding yet, as I may increase the size somewhere down the line. At the moment I haven't enough of this pale fabric, but that could change.
++++++++++
What would lead me to make a quilt in these subtle colors? Looking at the quilts that I brought out of the attic, all bright and cheery, made me think that for years I have been singing the same tune over and over. What about other moods, other environments? A quilt like this would be calming or exude a secure feeling, good in a financial institution or corporate offices. Of course I don't have any way of showing this to folks like that, but should I ever encounter them, I am ready!
And it was a good challenge to figure out how to make a design that worked with such low contrasting pale hues. Now that I am thinking "Modern Quilts" I know that simplicity and large areas of negative space is a good thing. And with QAYG I can enjoy the quilting part a lot more, not having to struggle with the whole quilt under the needle for hours at a time. Plus I feel like I am working in a series, and long time readers know how important that has been for me.
Despite that, I have a different idea for my next piece, which will involve PRINTS! Bright multicolor busy busy busy. Ha!

  4. Adding the stripes was a great idea! I like the mood of this one, I have a hard time to stay with one style because my mood changes so much. I like to have calm quilts and busy quilts at hand to suit the mood.
    I look forward to the prints.

  5. Wow are you ever right about your solution to the quilt dilemma ending up making your piece look even better. It is now offically "fabulous". LOL

    As for the change in color palette? I like your designs period. It was great to see you work in subtle colors for a change, but the bright colors you normally use reflect you. And you know what? All the art works I've see in business environments are bright splashes of color. You can go on using the bright colors you love so much!!! Hugs.

  6. I love what the striped connecting strips did to the overall composition. I am going to HAVE to make myself sit down and learn the quilt as you go method.

    I agree that the insertions really enliven the quilt, proving yet again that necessity is the mother of invention!
