The Other Knee

Knee3cThree years ago, May of 2009, I wrote this blog entry:

The older we get the more our conversations are about our health. I have always enjoyed great health and felt pretty invincible until lately.

I am now a hobbler. Yesterday I went to the Bone and Joint doctor and saw myself surrounded by lots of other hobblers. My right knee was x-rayed and had an MRI and will return for the verdict on the 21st. The doctor assured me that he could fix me right back into normalcy. I hope. Besides the pain, this puts me off most of everything that I like to do. Gardening is impossible without getting on my knees, using a shovel or even just walking about inspecting new growth. Standing at my quilting worktable hurts too. Even shopping hurts. Pooh.

++++
Now here we are in 2012 and I am seeing the same surgeon on Thursday. I hurt my left knee doing excessive showing off at Jazzercise and had to quit while I recovered from that pain. I thought my knee was fine but then in September I tried to step up onto a too-high place and pulled everything out of whack. I thought I could heal myself again, but it isn't working. Not only is my knee in pain, but because I am also hobbling, the hips are getting misused and that brings misery.
So I am not quilting or painting or gardening and I just sit all day and knit.
I like the knitting part. But that doesn't give me much to blog about. Again, pooh!

  2. So sorry to hear you are in pain with your knee, I feel for you I had the same problem for years, but last year on 4/7 I had both knees replaced
    I have never looked back, it is so wonderful to be pain free and get back to the things I love like walking and shopping
    My thoughts are with you

  3. So sorry to hear about your troubles. I do think knees just don't last as long as the rest of us.

  5. Hope your visit with the knee doc goes well. I had a partial knee replacement a few years ago -- what a relief to have no pain. They did some sort of surgery first to get rid of all the junk inside the joint, but that didn't fix the problem. A bit painful for a few weeks post surgery, but now super fine! No fun not to be able to do your favorite things. Good luck:)

    Awhile back I had my right knee roto-rootered, bone spurs fixed, menisci (?) fiddled with, and months of physical therapy. You have my sympathy. I go to either Silver Sneakers yoga or what the Y calls 'Active Older Adult Yoga' twice a week, and it makes all the difference in the world. Ignoring it and overdoing didn't work for me either. Pouting helped.

  10. So sorry to hear about the knee, and I'm sure it's very frustrating that it curtails all your normal activities (except for knitting of course!). Good that you have a doctor you are comfortable with, and I do hope he can fix you right up! Our dil who is just 40 already knows she has a knee replacement in her future... way too young to have to go through that, I'm thinking! Keep us posted on your progress, okay?

  13. Sorry to hear about your knee. YOu had us all worried that it was something far more serious and difficult. You'll be fine. Do what the dr. tells you. This will give you lots of time to dream up some new quilt plans!!

  14. That just plain stinks. Hope it does not involve surgery.

  15. I'm not looking forward to the day when my creaky knees stop working completely. So far they haven't stopped me doing much but last week I upped the aerobics into high impact and oh dear... it's now a week since I did aerobics and my knees (and ankles) are saying maybe they can contemplate some low impact work. You have my sympathy!
    (Also, if DH came home with a boat and a quad bike, I'd have a fit!)
