In the Shadows

In the Shadows
acrylic with collage and ink on canvas
6x12x1"
$100 Email me. Sold

Altho I have no idea what I am going to paint, I do go into the studio with a the idea  that I will do some sketches and see what happens. In this case I liked my initial sketch so much that I painted the drawing with matte medium, and collaged the image onto the canvas, which had been prepared with molding paste. To add mystery, I painted the whole thing black, and then rubbed off the paint, leaving black in the shallow recesses.

Working with a limited palette of ochre, Prussian blue, pthalo blue, diazonine purple and white, I added layers of transparent color and details with a tiny brush and ink pen.
I made myself stop before I went too far. Then I added a final coat of satin varnish.
My pals wanted more information on these products: matte medium or gloss medium are both white and dry clear, one matte the other shiny. I bought the satin varnish, also acrylic, thinking it would be somewhere in between, but it is also shiny anyway. The molding paste is like kindergarten paste, altho not tasty, hahaha! And it comes in jars or tubes. I also like gel medium which is super thick. I use a palette knife to load it onto the canvas. Dries clear or nearly clear... Golden acrylics in liquid form are generally more transparent and watercolor-like. More expensive, but they are worth it.

  2. This is a beautiful piece! So much depth and shadow... you are amazing! I need to make a shopping list from the last 3 posts... going to Michael's today, why not just blow my wad?! Do me a favor... next time you get the urge to do one of these, take 'process' photos, 'kay? I've never used things like molding paste, but I'm willing to try anything at least once!

  3. I was going to ask exactly what tiedyejudy did: can you show us the products you are using to prep the canvas, finish off with varnish, etc? There are just too many options when I venture into Michael's or Hobby Lobby! Seeing this moody piece may cause me to break into my son's acrylics :)

  6. And while we are all asking favors, could you tell us what kind of brushes you like to use with acrylics? Thanks.

  7. This piece is gorgeous. So moody and quiet--quite unlike your usual work, isn't it??

  8. Been wondering about the molding paste. I was a knife painter in my former life. Then became more realistic with thin oil paint. But I always loved working with the knife. You made me want to try it again.
