Not Smug. . . Grateful

I know it may seem like I am constantly patting myself on the back for the smart move we made to move here, but really, I am just so grateful for the series of events that made this happen. Never dreamed we could live like this, with so much space, beauty and peace.
In order to enjoy the newly created Dave's Memorial Garden we set about to find either a glider or swing to plunk down on the rise above the garden. We never did find the perfect thing, until we sat in these chaises last night at Walmart. For me it is just like sitting in the dentist's chair, which I LOVE. Usually I close my eyes, open my mouth and drift away, feet up and head lowered, thinking of Corbusier and his famous design. ($1500...yipes!)

Here's my view of the dog run and my veggie beds. I came out with the dawgs this morning, with coffee and a quilt and watched them from this vantage point. Now that's a setting for prayer.

Speaking of praying...heh, heh, Dave got a new old truck yesterday. 1991 Chevy Silverado 1500, shortbed.
He is happily working on it already. It needs only a bumper, tailgate, a recharge for the AC and that's about it. It is intended to be a mulch-mobile, and rock hauler. He loves to get rock as much as mulch. This will keep my van in good shape, transmission-wise. And Dave's pretty darn happy to have wheels again. He is doing so much better and I expect this truck to last longer, much longer than the last one.

Back to the garden...

Zucchini, tomatoes, green beans, beets and peppers are all going great guns.(before the usual bugs set in and ruin everything, knock on wood.) Rain and hot weather made it happen. The green onions that had sprouted in my crisper drawer are now becoming real onions. This is the first time I have tried to grow them. I wonder what I will get?
We are also growing three kinds of potatoes in the compost pile. This began as unplanned planting. Some russet potatoes sprouted in my cupboard and Dave threw them out in the compost, whereupon they grew into lovely green plants. He loves little red baby potatoes, which these were not, so I got some half priced seed potatoes at Lowe's, in Norland and Yukon Gold varieties, and now we have a bunch of leafy plants. Since the compost is mostly leaves and other garden debris it is light and fluffy and will be a quite nourishing little plot. Our neighbor two houses down has a big potato field, so even with the clay soil he can get a good harvest.
I say this every year: It's going to be a great summer.

  1. Melody, I feel exactly the same way about my move to Las Vegas. I'd always dreamed about living someplace completely new....away from the midwest with no snow, humidity or mosquitoes.... and experiencing living with mountains or an ocean or desert. When I found myself able to do so I jumped. And haven't looked back. I think a lot of people say "someday I'll...." and I just wish they'd take the chance. It's the best thing I've ever done1

I am trying to make sense of the veggie bed so near to the road when it could have been placed on the other side of the grass verge, closer to the house. No?

  4. I'm so glad you enjoy your home and garden so much, looking at the pictures, loving the solution you find for problems, the mulch, the dogs, the plants.... I love to read your stories and watch the pictures. I wish you a great summer, lots of healthy food and happy hours in your own "dentist chairs".
    Love, Pauline

  8. Ah . . . , Dave got some new wheels! I know he is so happy to have a truck again, and it is more than marvelous that he is still able to drive it. Glad you are in a good period now. Keep inspiring us with those pictures!

I have a version of that chair I got at Kohl's for $100+ dollars. It is heavy though, and if you're not strong, it isn't convenient to move around. Hubby does that for me. ♥♥♥
