Let me begin by saying 'Never say never'.
I put away my fabric because I was DONE with quilting and didn't want it staring at me, making me feel guilty. In its place I put my yarn.
Now I want my fabric in view again, but need to keep my yarn at my fingertips too. So the dining room shelving unit, the Expedit from IKEA, is the logical choice. I remembered seeing Jan Burgwinkle using her Expedit as fabric storage and doesn't it look positively fabulous? So I wanted to do it too, only with my yarn.
Here it is unloaded and in the studio. It has wheels which is practically a law in the studio, as I like to change things around, doncha know.
And here it is full of all my yarn, mostly. Whatever didn't fit is going to be given away to my lovely sister and niece. Let them figure out a place to put it.
I chose to put my yarn in this unit because it doesn't weigh as much as my fabric and because of the slide out plastic 'drawers' which are now stuffed to capacity. I love how the storage bins fit so well in the cubbies. I now need more of those for the fabric scraps which are accumulating at an alarming rate.
Out of the closet and back onto the shelves came the fabric, leaving seven large bins of emptiness. The fabric on the left is hand dyed stuff and the right holds commercial stuff. Notice the vast emptiness of four cubbies? These will be for stored scraps soon.
In moving all this it was decided to put my sewing table back in the dining room because it is white, and to bring the big dining room table from the garage to use as my new and improved sewing table. It has a leaf which will make it ideal for pining bed sized quilts, standing up, with bed risers making it the right height.
So now we have a bigger dining table, where we can eat, if and when I find a place for all this stuff that was in the Expedit.
That wall is now open, and ready for new art. Woowoo!
I must tell you that after all this moving and restoring and cleaning out, I am one pooped person. But soooo happy!
Wow great job! It looks like you are living in a spa I want to visit with those peaceful colors.
ReplyDeleteOMG I wish you lived nearby and could run over and say "This is what you need to do". I have a great studio...it's a casita... but I can't get my act together and get it organized so I don't go out there often.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how much you get done in one day and how excited you must feel to get up in the morning to work on something wonderful!!!
Even if your not using the fabric, it is always pretty to look and stare at it.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy those empty spaces while they last...they won't be empty for long!
ReplyDeleteYou are a marvel at organizing and moving stuff around. I enjoy having a peek into your art/decorating life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
So, what is going on the wall where the shelves used to be? And... can I borrow just a tiny bit of your energy?
ReplyDeleteYou just get finished and off you go again. If I had one little bit of your energy, I'd be good.
ReplyDeleteI for one am so glad it never ends! So glad to see your fabric back!!
ReplyDeleteCan't have too many Expedits! Do I see a blank wall there?
ReplyDeleteLOL...I thought I was the only one that moved things around a LOT!!! My DH cringes when he hears me shuffling things around...again!! I've rearranged my sewing room at least 4 times in the last 3 years. I just can't seem to get enough storage :)
ReplyDeleteYour studio is looking fantastic! I technically have a craft room but alas it is also a storage room whilst we renovate the kitchen (7 months and counting...). I have a billy bookcase full of fabric and many plastic tubs of yarn and fleece. Hmm, maybe I need a couple of expedits? But I am about to move to Sydney...
ReplyDeleteI am with Cindra...wish I had your energy! I love, love, love what you do with your rooms!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful studio! And so tidy!
