All Sewn Up

The sewing is finished but I am considering a border. I usually don't like borders, but this is less than 60" wide (58") and only 82" long and my batting is 72x90" so I can go larger.

Now that I have the larger dining room table in my studio I can pinbaste the backing, batting and top on the table, instead of the floor.

On the other hand, this quilt is meant for the bed upstairs which is tucked against the wall and has drawers, so it needn't be as large as a bedspread usually is. I'll have to put it on the bed to see if a border is necessary.

I used about four different pinks for the star centers, in keeping with the scrappy look. And after making this, I guess my fear of sewing on the bias has been overcome. One of the things I liked about this design is that the star points don't get cut off, and the spiderwebs don't have to line up. Phew! What a relief that was not to struggle with matching.

If it weren't for this year's QAWM I probably wouldn't have had the nerve to tackle this. But I am so glad I did. It gave me renewed confidence to try other designs that I have been afraid to try.

  1. would the table get scratched up by the pins if you basted the quilt on the table?

..so you don't get afraid of other projects? Coming from someone who has had work in Quilt National multiple times, that is amazing! :) Reminds me (and other readers of yours, I hope) that everyone has their week points and anxieties...that everyone agonizes over their dreams.

Good on you, woman, for _living_ your dreams!!

  5. It works without a border, and would also work with one.

  12. It's great...a border could look fun though - I'm just interested to see what you'll do!

  13. I wonder if you are aware how encouraging it is to hear that someone with your talents and accomplishments has a fear of something. Years ago you came to our guild in Mentor,Ohio and gave a class for us. Something you said at the time has stuck with me. You said "my work isn't perfect". That was somehting we all needed to hear because we thought your work was wonderful.
I love love love your Spiderweb

  16. Wow! I love all the pink! (My favorite color---that's why I had three boys!) What a great quilt---and it's reassuring to hear that even you have been afraid to do some techniques. You continue to be an inspiration to so many of us!

  17. Funny, Ijust can't picture you afraid of any designs or techniques! Love the pink with the green. Try a thin line of green, then the darker pinks around for a border. It is really turning out great!

  19. Love the quilt :) IMHO, I think it needs a border, even if it's a narrow one, just to "finish" it off.

Can't wait to see what you do next.

  20. I love it. I have been started to cut out strips for my web quilt. I do not plan to put boarders on my quilt. I must finish fish quilt first.

  21. Mel, I didn't think that fear existed for you, as confident as I have seen you....glad that you overcame and created this wonder (and in record time!) I think turquoise would make a lovely frame.

  22. When you started this project I thought "that doesn't look like Melody." Now I'm amazed at your unerring sense of color and design. I love what you've put together. You are truly an artist.
