Brooke Comes to Visit

And she brought her quilt-in-progress. I love love love this piece. We were auditioning border fabrics and this one was perfect. She will be adding another row of blocks to make this more of a lap sized quilt. Imho it is WALL ART.

She asked: What makes a quilt wall art?
Simple Mel says: It hangs on the wall.
But really, what does make a quilt wall art? I think it is the intention from the get go. One makes the piece with the idea of gazing at it. One sees things when it hangs on the wall that are missed when it becomes functional. But of course if it is made to hang, one takes a bit more care with the finish, knowing it might be scrutinized.
It is so great to have a quilting sister. I can remember when (a long long time ago) when I suggested she get into quilting. She asked me: Why would I want to do something you're already doing?
There was a lot of underlying meaning in her response...a lot.
My answer: So we could  have something in common and that you might enjoy doing it.
I think I was correct, she is enjoying doing it and we do have this in common now. And I am way envious of her natural ability to design and use color.
You can't always get what you want, but this time I was the lucky one. Doncha know I wanna make this quilt now too!

I love the wonkitude of the blocks and setting strips. The turquoise squares are zingy, and I especially like that Brooke fit that one in with a tiny bit of help from another strip. The girl has game.

You'll get my permission to make this only if you agree to PIECE it and not fuse it.

Tell your sister that the quilt is very very nice.

Just teasing you, don't take this seriously.

I got into quilting as a way to get instructions from/spend time with my husband's sister and my brother's wife. I'm a successful quilter on that score. Initially, I had trouble cutting into big yardage--I solved that problem by buying only half yards and going scrappy.

  3. I think Brooke got the same color gene you got! Brighter IS better, right? I't really neat, and I agree it should hang where people can see and enjoy it!

  4. Wow! That is a fabulous quilt! And I so agree about wall art. Sometimes we agonize over a small part of a quilt that will primarily be rumpled up and snuggled into while watching a movie (for example) and no one will realize that picking the blue over the purple for that narrow inner border was a stroke of genius :). Up on the wall we can really appreciate more of the colors, patterns, design, etc. How fun that you can share quilting with your sister.
