Stocking the Shelves

I'd like to say that it's all in, but there are few fabrics that should stay in bins in the garage, potting shed, or closet. Mostly garment or upholstery fabrics. I did manage to empty 14 bins, but refilled one with scraps that are too messy to be on display.
I am surprised to see how much hand dyed fabric I have saved from my Artfabrik days. And I do have a larger collection of prints than I realized, especially in larger lengths, purchased for backing or maybe shirts?? who knows, lots of space is taken up with those.
As far as my hand dyed solids, seeing them out here tells me how low I am on darker greens or purples, and how overstocked I am on turquoise. Good to know.
I like having the fused fabrics easy to retrieve too. There are more fused scraps in my armoire.
So the empty shelves? Well... I plan to dye more fabrics when the weather warms up, and will have a place to put them when that happens.

  1. I have no alternative but to conclude that you have a team of worker elves who assist you.
PS: Popeye looks like the taxidermist dropped by! Sorry, Popeye. That was rude of me. lol.

  2. I think Popeye approves. I'm glad you have unearthed all of the old prints. Some of them are better than what's available now.

  3. Nice morning's work! And I'm glad to see Popeye approves of the location...I use the same bookcase (espresso color, purchased used off craigslist) to store my yarn stash (in baskets). My fabric stash takes up a room-width closet my husband outfitted with shelving. It is so good to be able to see all you have at once!

  4. Cool! Nice shelves!!! My sewing room is being remodelled. Sheet rock is torn off to add more insulation. All my stuff is in 2 bedrooms. Not sure when I will actually see the room back with walls, flooring and cabinets. Fabic is in BIG rubbermaid boxes right now. Still quilting. Just wait until they rip out the kitchen too....

  7. How wonderful. You could always make a simple curtain on a cafe rod to put over each tall double stack if you thought light would fade the fabrics! Although How lovely to be able to see all your fabrics!

  8. Oooh, nice! It's great to be organized, isn't it? I'm planning on putting some shelves in my closet when I paint and put down a new floor in my sewing studio this summer. Right now it's full of boxes, and it's about impossible to find anything. I'm envious of your nice shelves!

You must have a well-behaved kitty. Mine would be happily pulling things off the shelves when I wasn't looking. She firmly believes her purpose in life is to knock stuff in the floor.

  9. How fun to put things out and arrange them to your liking. Big T just reconverted the closet into shelving similar to yours and I love to just stand and look and move things around. You've done a good job of categorizing.

Can you ever have too much turquoise? I think not!

I think Popeye needs a cat bed! I bet you could whip something up that would be suitable for him.

  12. Wow! Love the shelves! And the contents! And the Popeye!

I'm pretty certain that God has sent us Ikea as an act of true love.

  13. They look good, all displayed on the shelves like that. I wish I didn't have occasional invasions of carpet beetles that necessitates I keep everything locked away in bins. bah.

  16. Wowee, when you get an idea you really get focused and get to it! I think this is such a splendid idea and I'm envious of your very own sewing room which allows you to put it all out on display. Good Job, Mel!

  17. I love this. Popeye just looks like a real cat, lying down on the floor and just sleeping through it all.
