A Change of Pace
1

Out of the blue, after I cleaned up my studio, I had an idea that I haven't sewn any new clothes in ages. I used to love clothes sewing, but with all the great stuff I recently found at the famous rumdums like Goodwill, or America's Thrift Store, I totally forgot about making my own. I have a seasoned stash of lovely fabrics and just a ton of old patterns, some of which are back in style again. Imagine that.

So I got it all out and cut out a long t-shirt (first pattern) to start. The Hoodie-Jacket in the Vogue pattern looks intriguing and I have a some black fleece which would work for that. And the jacket-shirt in the third pattern would be cool if colorblocked or with interesting pockets appliqued on one side.
I managed to rethread my serger and get the tension adjusted perfectly. Shocking.

Did I mention the hundreds of antique Stretch and Sew patterns that I have collected over the years? They can be made with woven fabrics too. One is a saddle shoulder pullover. When have you ever seen one of those?
This one offers both full and tapered sleeves. I don't think anything but knits would work with this one. It is from 1980. I used it in the past to make matching shirts for me and Dave. Hey it's not too late to do this again...PJs perhaps?
Obviously this is a distraction from knitting. Still recouping.

  1. Jeez. I'm hoping I won't be following your lead on this one now! I can't wait to see your fabric choices for the one on the right!

  2. Oh my - Stretch and Sew - I still have patterns, and I still make one of their flowing jackets!

  3. Necessity is truly the mother of invention. Your knitting injury is encouraging you to branch out and be creative, which is wonderful in a glass half full kind of way! Hey; I have tons of patterns from the 80s when I used to sew clothing also...and I'm feeling a bit of arm pain in that knitting arm. Voodoo? You do...

  4. Wow, the Burda pattern is so Annie Hall--still love it! Have fun, can't wait to see the results. Isn't it good to have a new activity to turn to when you can't do the other one(s)!

  6. Just had an "its time to start sewing cloths again" conversation with a friend yesterday. Haven't in years. Must be in the air. Love those patterns on top. One of my Sunday errands is a visit to JoAnns pattern section in search of raglan sleeve tops/jackets. Give me comfort or give me...well, discomfort which is NO fun.

  7. Oh heavens! Back in the day I made my own Stretch-n-Sew UNDERWEAR and BATHINGSUITS!! I still love those patterns, and like you haven't made clothes in years. I love the Indigo Junction line as well, they look great for office clothing.

  9. Taking old patterns and give them a modern look with what you have available, always forces to get creative and try out unexpected ways of mixing and matching.

I already made my first vest. I'm looking forward to see your result.

  10. Ditto with you and Sea Mists and Sunsets...just BOUGHT an online pattern that I love and have a few on hand that I keep thinking about. It's almost as if "someone" puts out an invisible vibe and we all get the same idea at around the same time. Laura Murray Designs has some cool patterns--the one I bought is here:
