Rethinking the Red

I never used to be this indecisive.
This is the quilt I made for the living room which I needed to 'feel' the color scheme before we (Dave) painted. I like all the colors in it and having just red in my room was insufficient, even with adding white. And not what I would call a soothing retreat color scheme.
I need all the soothing I can get.
But I want it to be fun, and so ME, and just not so Minnie Mouse, as my sister commented.
I know you are saying that I need to make a quilt to make it ME. Well, I can't sleep under a quilt.
Sacrilege!
Yes. I know.
Here's what happened. I slept under the duvet and comforter and soon my right foot was in mortal pain all day and night (plantar faciitus) because the heavy covers bent my foot the wrong way when I slept. The pain was enhanced when I tripped twice on our stairs and injured my right knee. This makes me crabby as you might imagine.
So I have undone my duvet and used it just as a topper for my bed taking it off each night.
Not so pretty because it wrinkles and just isn't right in other ways too.
Which led me to the polka dots.
I THOUGHT that would be the fix, since it is merely a single layer. I would keep it on, not tossing it in a pile at night. But it drags too.
I need to just have the sheet and comforter so my foot can heal.
BUT...what if I make a quilt that I love and fold it up and put it on the chair each night? No wrinkles and neat as a pin in the daytime, loaded with colors? I can do that.
DUH.
Why didn't I think of this before?
Because my brain has been busy with other things.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

  1. You need a sleeping brace for your foot. I found one on line and it was great. My PF got worse at night because I tend to stretch out my foot making the tendon stretch even more. The brace (with velcro fasteners) is lightweight and really works. Just google it and you will find several versions. Also, are you doing your stretches?

  2. You know I love polka dots, but I like the breaking up of color here, too.

I've also seen a frame that fits at the bottom of the bed and keeps the covers up off the foot. Can't find the URL but will send it when I do.

  5. Try freezing a bottle of water to roll on the bottom of your foot, it feels wonderful!

Pardon me, I might be missing something or some time here, but didn't you make a quilt for your bed shortly after you moved in? Or was it a duvet cover?

  7. Anon, you are correct. I did make a duvet cover and didn't like it. It was not what I thought it would be and banished it to the linen closet. It has taken me this long to relax enough to start a project that takes two whole days to finish.
And thanks to everyone for the foot cures. I feel relief coming already.

My mother could never have the covers tugging at her feet either. She suffered with arthritis and all kinds of circulation problems. I remember she had a "tent" from the medical supply store that her doctor prescribed for her. It was under the covers at the foot of her bed. She had it from the time I was a little girl and was still using it up until she passed away 2 years ago. I'm sure you can probably find them online nowadays and don't need a script for one. :)

I would dye the white polka dots orange...I love all the colors you use on your walls...and the new quilt is great.

  10. How about light green for a bedroom? I am very happy with a lemon yellow, but I wanted it even more green.
Quilts were made to sleep under them, but they are to heavy, I think so.

  11. I think you're on the right track. Even though I don't know you personally, you don't seem to be a red and white polka dot girl.

I have PF, too. Someone recommended Earth shoes to me. The heel is a bit lower than the toes. Seems a bit weird, but since I've been wearing them, I have no more pain! You can get them at zappos.com.

  12. Keep it up and you'll have a new look for your bedroom for every month of the year.

Wait...that's not a bad idea. A calendar bedroom!

  13. Mel,

For lightweight warmth a down comforter is wonderful.

One thing I do after I change the sheets is get in bed, lie down and kick my feet up and down at the bottom of the bed so that the sheets are not so tight at that end.

Another option for a PF brace: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/TDU100/Tandem_Sports_Thermoskin_Plantar_FXT

  15. I solved the problem by purchasing a couple of pillows for the foot of the bed. It worked. We just stick them under the covers before going to sleep. And, extra bonus, they can also serve as foot supports. Damaged my ankle and arch a few years ago. Wouldn't heal until the pillow idea came to me. Two inexpensive pillows later we are both sleeping soundly. Hubby has leg cramps and this has lessened those as well.

So.... love the ideas for the bedroom. It's fun from this direction watching your room evolve!
    Re:PF - nasty little thing isn't it?
I recently found a miracle, no kidding. It is Nelson's (brand name) ARNICA cream, homely little tube of cream that works wonders. Really, I am as surprised as you will be, it maybe a bit difficult to find. If you have something like a Whole Foods you'll find it there or better yet - get thee to the internet! Rub it in a couple times a day and before you know it it has worked it's magic... try it on your knee also.
