A Bright New Day

This year our tree peony buds are just huge. The usually bloom around Mother's Day and will no doubt put on a great display by the weekend. You will note the helpful ants which are clustered around that bud on the right. Cary was built on an anthill, alongside the many gravel pits in our vicinity. Still, we have very few tornadoes, so there is always something to be thankful for.

I had to shoot this bud in contrast to my meaty paw, for scale. Good thing the stems on this peony are woody. Our other peonies are getting metal supports from the local greenhouse today. Must have them looking good for prospective buyers.

Bleeding hearts in pink ...
and white varieties are our in force in the back garden and are accompanied by the super fragrant white lilacs.

How I wish you could smell these...

My mood has definitely improved with a great night's sleep, and a raucous awakening by the multitude of nature's chorus. Cardinal's, robins and mourning doves hang out in my trees and vie for the loudest calls. The open window makes them seem right in my room. I don't mind. I don't want to miss a moment of the morning.
Our lawn chairs are covered with dew, and we keep towels nearby to dry them off so we can enjoy our morning coffee in the blazing sun.
A great new day begins.

  3. The wonders of a good night's sleep and a hot cup of coffee. And the views in the garden of everything starting to bloom don't hurt. Wish I could smell your lilac -- one of my favorite flowers.

  6. I see those ants on those peonies... They always seem to find that flower and I always wonder how they do that. This will be my first year that I have gotten a peony to grow here in Saluda NC. When I lived in Chicago they grew so well that I had to stake them up. Now after 14 yrs of trying this year they must be in the right place because there are big buds ready to burst.
Your love of gardening truly shows in these beautiful pictures.
