Blueberry Hill

Blueberry Hill
Hand dyed cottons, fused, hand and machine quilted. ~12" square

While I dye a lot of blue fabric, hardly any of it makes it way into my work. I usually use turquoise instead, and there is a bunch of it here too. But I had this shaded dark blue that makes this piece, imho.
Thanks for all the encouraging comments. I hope many of you are considering working in a small format. It is so fun! Posted by Picasa

  1. Hello Melody,
those crisp, even stiches in this piece have my heart racing. May i ask, what thread it is and what machine setting you used? They are my ideal.
    Thanks,

  2. The larger visible stitches are hand done with pearl cotton size 8. The machine stitching is pretty tiny, so you may have been confused about what you are seeing.

  3. Love the shaded blue -- but without the yellow........ Gotta have that yellow.

    Every day, a new treat!
Mrs Mel, I must ask if you are doing these small pieces in the same manner that you have done the larger ones, ie, do you make a pattern to work from, or are you doing these by eye? In addition, I would like to know if you are piling up the pieces, or cutting away from behind, or are you, in fact, doing pattern pieces with a small overlap?
    The new pieces are delightful!

  8. Judy, I don't use a pattern for these pieces. I gather the colors I plan to use, make some striped fabric from those and find several pieces that I will cut into chunks for the main part of the composition. I have drawn out a 12" square on the release paper from the wonder-under, and then I arrange pieces on it. I don't have any more of a plan than that, plus the addition of fused strings afterwards, but I am keeping to a color scheme, obviously, for each. Some pieces overlap like a seam and others are cut away before finally fusing them.
It's all pretty fundamental. But for me it is such a diversion from my willy nilly all color all the time approach.

  10. Wow, I like to see you work in Blue. Could you post all of these fruity-square quilts in a row, so we can see them as a series? Or should I just do that on my own?

A small quilt is in my future also. Thanks to you.
