Plum Plaza

Plum Plaza
Hand dyed cottons, fused, hand and machine quilted, ~12" squarish

I have had a few questions about the hand work. I am using #8 pearl cotton and whatever embroidery needle will fit the thread. My big trick is to hand stitch on the top and batting before the backing fabric is attached. That way no knots are visible on the final product, and I only have to go through two layers. After the backing is added, then I will machine quilt through all three layers.

It turns out that most of the previous pieces in this series are less than 12" so I will have to amend those measurements.
For the first time in ages I feel really happy with this work. I feel like I have completely stopped jumping through hoops and am just enjoying myself in the studio. Posted by Picasa

Mindblowingly beautiful! The speed at which you produce these is unbelieveable.

I am going to try to finish off my Bodacious Bloomers this weekend and the piece I did in Laura's class too...

    Melody,

Your work has had me stopping in regularly for months now. So glad I somehow (who remembers) found my way. Though this is the first time I've ventured into comment land, please know each visit has been a rich visual, educational and personal treat. Thanks so much for putting it all out there. You have me playing with fabric again after a long, long time.

This new series rocks! Oops, I'm probably too old to say that. Or not!

  5. Melody,

I have come across your work several times now and I love it. The colors and design are lovely.Tonight I came across your name again on the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival site. I just received a letter accepting my work to the festival and I was checking out workshops when I clicked on one of yours and low and behold it was your work again :) Anyway, I hope I run into you at the show. I am VERY new to quilting and can't wait to learn more at the show. Do you mind if I add your blog to my link list so I can access it easily?

The new series is wonderful - I especially love Cherry Street! You mention that you wait until you add the backing so you only have to sew through 3 layers - does this mean you trim away all the underparts that you fuse to? I've always assumed it was multi-layered.

Keep up the good work, it looks like Brooke is also plugging away at her goal! Rah Rah Rah!

  10. Yes Deirdre, I do cut away the layer below so there is only one layer, fused directly to the batting, no base fabric at all.
