Adding and Subtracting

My sister Brooke and I decided to go on a diet together, as mutual support. I admit I have been really LAX in my eating over the last several years, and it shows. So when she suggested this site: www.loseit.com I joined up and now we are charting everything we eat and how much we weigh daily.
One plugs in one's weight, age and loss goal and it automatically supplies the amount of calories one should eat in a day. But the really cool thing is that you input each food item and it supplies the calorie count, and adds it up and subtracts it from the daily total. Now that eliminates having to think, or do math. I likey.
At first I was not too committed, and guesstimated my weight. I was short by like 13 pounds. So I bit the bullet and bought a new scale, as our had magically disappeared into the garage (Dave took it, I don't know whyyyyyyyyy). This new scale has tenths of a pound, so even if  you only lose a tenth, it shows. Encouraging.
This started a whole domino effect. I had to buy food I haven't had in the house for ages, and had to rethink each meal. The pantry got rearranged, the refrigerator cleaned out and little tweaks took place in my day. I even scoured my old Brita filter set up so I could have clear uncloudy tea. (Can't drink coffee without the calorie laden flavored creamer).

Since I am not only doing this for myself, but for the good health of my sister, I am more committed.
And to my surprise, my first goal was met, easily. I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to fit into my old jeans from last winter, and that would really depress me. But voila, I slipped right in. Now I don't have to invest in sweat pants for the interim. Ha!
I hate talking about dieting, so this will be the only entry on this subject. Suffice to say, it has been a distraction from the myriad other things going on around here. I am still knitting, waiting for contractors (a skill developed over the years) and making weekly quilts. So now, back to business as usual.

  1. Congrats to you and Brooke! I joined a similar on-line site 2 years ago, lost about 45 pounds and have kept it off over a year now, so I know it works just to pay attention to what you eat. And it does not take a lot of time... I log each meal as I go, but I do a little planning of meals and snacks to keep from making bad choices at the last minute. My only downfall is chocolate, and I try to factor that in. Good that you two are doing it to support each other. I have a support group on-line, and those of us who keep at it seem to be doing better than those who come and go... best wishes to you both!

  2. How very timely. I loooove getting older and have loudly and proudly told everyone so. BUT this year I became a pensioner ! which, incidentally, I thought was just for old people...and was also told I was pre diabetic. I want to reverse that...and the only way is to lose weight by eating properly and moving more. Like you Melody, my cupboard is now full of things I have scoffed at for too long. My water intake has increased as well...and I can walk much more quickly than usual for a lot longer. Weigh day is Wednesday. Fingers crossed.
I can't wait to see Melissa's quilt. Just saying...

I don't like the word "diet" so I call it mindfully eating. :-)

  6. I use My Fitness Pal, which is very much like your new app...I started using it just to see the amount of sodium and calcium I was taking in daily. But it's great to look up items and decide if I really want to 'eat' it or not! Good luck!

Ok, signed up for the website. Just what I needed. Easy to track. Many thanks for the tip....remember "mindfully eating" is what we are doing. Good luck :-)

  9. Counting the calories does work. All these years I've always ate healthy but it seems I continued to put on the pounds. When I was diagnosed as pre diabetic I decided to keep track of the carbs & fats but actually kept track of the calories. That's when I found out I was eating healthy but just eating TOO MUCH of healthy foods. I've always been "thin" all my life but I had that "back fat" and mini "love handles". All of that is gone-lost over 25 lbs and have kept it off for over 2 years. I no longer count calories because I'm now aware of how many calories I should be taking in and how to make a better choice based on calories between two foods. Who knew? Calorie counting does make a difference.
