Quilt Music

Don Freund's Quilt Horizon, commissioned by Robert and Sara LeBien for the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, is the composer's response to a brilliant and deeply engaging quilt by Melody Johnson displayed in the LeBien's home. Complete program notes at http://db.tt/6WQua4q

I had nothing to blog today, since I have been non-stop knitting, but this morning I got an email notifying me of this video. Now that's somethin' that doesn't happen everyday.

  4. This is so cool! I'm taking a design class now, in which we create design images for quilts while listening to music, among other techniques. But this is the first time I've seen a quilt inspire a musical composition. Kudos!

  6. Well, how cool is that???? That quilt must have taken you forever. It certainly shows off your machine-quilting skills! It's fun to try to imagine the conversation that led to the composer deciding to use it.

How absolutely cool!! I have a famous cousin in a small corner of this world. I'm feeling proud. And what a wonderful way to interpret fabric art or any sort of art for that matter.

  11. Wow! Touche! What an honor. I felt as though I was floating in a sea of color.

I loved the close-ups of all the different quilting lines, especially those spirals (I don't recall ever seeing this motif before) and the music accompanying those views.

Beautiful quilt - it must have taken a long time.Congratulations. (By the way, when I clicked on the link for the notes, it didn't work).

  19. Thank you, dakotaessence, for posting the correct link for the composer's notes.

Melody, it was so interesting to read about what inspired you to design this quilt. It is even more moving to know the story behind it.

On another note, the video seems to have disappeared from your site?? (I posted the link to your blog for this video on my facebook account - now one can see it!).

I am blown away! Indeed, this doesn't happen every day. How does it feel to be a muse?

  23. Wow, Melody! I learned about this on Craft Gossip. Your quilts truly are works of art, and what better homage than to have one work of art inspire another! Your work being called brilliant and deeply engaging seems to be one of the highest compliments one artist can pay another. Congratulations! You are an inspiration.

  24. Melody, I can't tell you how much your work inspires me. I just love it. I know I've told you this over and over again, but, it's so true. To have this quilt set to music, amazing. The music makes your quilt talk and tell a story in a whole new way. Congrats, and, again, thanks for sharing your talent with the rest of the world.
