Vestido Rios

I was doing so well knitting with just a single colored yarn, and then I fell in love with this multicolored (arco iris) Malabrigo Rios. I should know better, but  my real nature is "All colors, all the time" and I can't help myself. When you see it in the skein it looks so different than when it is knit up, which is why I went nuts and whipped out my credit card.
Irresistible no? (photo from Ravelry)
When it is knit up it loses its multiness and dissolves into...meh. Therefore I am forced to add a few more colors to bring the oomph.

Just the purl rows are the Malabrigo.
So because I have to add more colors, I must design a project that will fit them all in.

The resulting vest incorporates all the colors that I saw in the original ball of multicolored Rios, so in the end I am just using it as a theme yarn. Hrumpfh. I have added some hand dyed merino, some Rowan and Zara merinos too. This time I thought ahead and saved the bottom part of the vest for the darker colors.

It seems to me that I have to relearn this lesson over and over again. It is better to go for a multicolored yarn that is spun rather than hand dyed. Then the resulting knitting gets the long spaces of color I want to see.
I'll be adding a button band, something sleeve-y and a finishing rib to this vest today, and hopefully I will find shirt in my wardrobe that works to wear with it.

  1. I actually love the single colour on the bottom (more my personal style); but with the addition of the brights, it really zings, doesn't it?!

This reminds me of a music hall sketch, where the clown is undone when his hat takes on a life of its own, as did your project. You have a talent for comedy too!

  4. It's looking way fun so far! I need to hone my knitting skills ... I can create a quilt pattern without a second thought, but haven't developed my knitting skills enough. Practice, Gale! PRACtICE!! Merry Christmas, Mel!

  6. I had the same experience with the Rios. I love what you have done by making it your starting point and adding all the other colors. The resulting vest is exquisite.

I usually like to spin my own yarn in long color changes for nice stripes. It's so easy and yet everyone seems to think it's magic or something.

Kudos to you on your vision! I love it and would gladly wear it if it were my own.

Oh my gosh this vest is pretty! Can't wait to see your pattern. I love how you have dark blue at the bottom and COLOR at the top.
    Beautiful!!!

  8. That KnitPicks yarn will be All. Mine. when I get back to the USA. Assuming there is any left, that is.
I've dyed self-striping yarn. It is a hassle but is do-able. I also spin it sometimes but it is much quicker to go out and buy it.
