What's This?

Good question. I don't know for sure yet what it is. Mostly it was a puzzle I had to solve, and now that I have, I am making a second one, so I guess it is going to become a garment. Or a pillow? Or a purse? Or the start of an afghan?
What I wanted to do was make/join these triangle modules  without breaking the yarn. In other words, picking up the stitches from the previous piece and continuing to knit around. It was simple until the last triangle, where I had to join the three as I knit the fourth. After a false start I got the trick, which was to pick up a stitch from the front of the last triangle and slip it over the adjacent stitch. Only knitters would care about this. There will not be a test later.
I had this yarn and needed a project that would show off its gradual color changes, and I like that this square does this. This is wool and kinda warm, even for the four days of cold weather we will have this winter. But I think I could wear a shortie vest with sleeves, maybe short sleeves, and a long sleeve Tee underneath.
I'm thinking of a yoke at the top of the square, and then side panels/sleeves knit sideways out from that unit, with a bottom panel added somewhere along the way. Because the yarn is Aran weight and I am using a size 8 needle, it is flying along. I knit this patch in just a few hours, half of which was at knitting group, where you know I am only paying 1/2 attention.
We'll see what happens.

  1. I love it. Did you make up this pattern or find it somewhere? Care to share? I am always looking for a good blanket square.

  4. It's so beautiful! I cannot design anything knitted; I need a pattern even though I've been knitting for years. You are lucky to be able to do that.
I know part of it is that I'm just too lazy to sit down and try it!

How about a jerkin? If you actually attach the squares to a long sleeved T in one of the component colors, you have something that will keep its shape. Love the colors; one could drop spaghetti sauce on it without major damage!
