Dark and Murky?

The top blocks are finished and sewn into panels. The idea is to quilt one panel and then add the next ala Marianne's method of joining strips, as in borders. OK so my 'border' is actually the next row of blocks, but I think this will work anyway. I hope.
I plan to do minimal quilting, just stitch in the ditch so I don't gather up too much fabric on the first go around. I can always go back and add more if necessary. The important thing to me in this experiment is experiencing the process.
On the other hand, I AM CRAZY ABOUT THE COLOR, which is far from dark and murky, even tho that was sorta my intention. Ha! Well, not exactly. I wanted to do something not so Fiesta and more SBE. (Simple But Elegant) To get in the right frame of mind I looked at the work of Nancy Crow, Marcia Derse, and Robin Ferrier. But, you know, I got off track colorwise, which was supposed to be a teeny step away from traditional Amish.
I have done a traditional Amish colored quilt...

While I was able to do this once, I just couldn't make it dark and murky this time.

Your latest quilt, like always, just glows with colour! Yummilicious! Dark and murky appears to be a challenge for you, so maybe you can leave the dark and murky for others to do, and celebrate your incredible ability with colour. The QAYG method you are doing works just fine. Sew on!

  2. Lovely! Makes me think of fall and colors reflecting in a moss covered pool.

I think Judy may be right. Your use of color is glorious.

  3. What eye-candy!!!! I love both of them. It's amazing what your little touch does to the Amish quilt. I love when you're quilt-making...I can hardly wait to open the blog each morning!

  4. I admire the subdued hues of the quilts of those you mention in your blog. But try as I might I just can't wind up with a quilt like theirs. My own hand dyes, even when they are "muddy" still glow. Maybe because of whose directions for dyeing I followed in the first place huh?

  8. Your color sense is amazing. It sings to me... I'd love to be able. I will have to study yours more often. Thank you for sharing, and challenging.

  9. Nope - definitely not dark and murky, but very intriguing and totally beautiful. I love the colors and I REALLY LOVE this QAYG technique from Marianne. I've read her tutorial twice now and like your adaptation to "rows" rather than "borders." I was wondering about that myself, so I'm glad you tried it first! :-)

  10. Why would you even want to do dark and murky?

HA! When I read that you were going to do Amish colors I chuckled. Then I peeked and sure enough, your work is more vibrant and always will be!! I LOVE your color choices and combinations. I, too, can't wait to read your new entries. I dye fabric and make little wall hangings and your work is a constant inspiration to me.
