The New Hosta Bed

Ok it looks like a big cow plop at this point, or a shallow grave, but give it a few weeks and it will be full of green leafiness. It is in the perfect-for-hosta-site, with morning sun and filtered afternoon brightness. This mound is 12 bags of topsoil/composted manure and if this works, you can bet your bippy this shade garden will grow in size in the future. I put those rocks at the edge to keep it intact and I intend to get the grown up kind that I am using in the other beds. Cottage Stone or whatever they're called.

This is the easiest kind of garden to make. Open bag and pour out the dirt. Let it dry a day and then plant. Then keep watch for digging dogs and voles. Sigh. It's always something.

Thus endeth this round of gardening and I can attend to housework and laundry which is sorely needed. Then back to the studio, with renewed vigor.
I fully expect to see snow again before Spring is really here. Mark my words.

  1. I have some hostas to divide and plant elsewhere but the weather isn't cooperating for any length of time yet, so in a couple weeks I'm sure I'll be able to get at it. Our house faces north so I have plans for them in the front yard around a huge tree :) Love hostas...so easy.

  3. It is snowing here in New Hampshire! Darn it all.... On the positive side it is Poor Man's Fertilizer!!!

I love strolling vicariously through your gardens, Melody.

  4. Well, you may still get snow, but at least you have GREEN outdoors to feast your eyes on. The worst part of winter, for me, is being color starved! It’s raining in the Salt Lake Valley today, so we get WET with our gray and brown. I am off to stitch on something pink and yellow. Hugs, Cathy

  5. We got more snow yesterday, but not enough to keep us from a trip to Phoenix today. Still, I am anxious to get out and start a little gardening myself... maybe by the weekend! I have never grown Hostas, and had never heard of them before I became a fan of your blog! Maybe this year I'll give them a try.

  6. Do you know that deer love hostas? I have to keep a fence around mine or the deer will eat them to the ground. The weatherman is predicting snow for NE Ohio this week - snow snow stay away!
