We Watched It Happen

7:00 am. While having our morning coffee by the fishpond, watching the world go by on their way to work, a car swerved off the road, overcorrected, hit the culvert drain pipe, FLEW INTO THE AIR, bounced off its roof and landed aright at the entrance to our driveway. No one was hurt. The woman was driving her daughter to school and thankfully they were wearing seatbelts, but I told 911 that an ambulance was needed. In minutes the police and paramedics arrived, but the woman refused treatment. She was quite shaken as you can imagine, and didn't know what happened. The police asked us to describe the event and asked if we saw her toss anything out her window. Is that strange?

Here's our road and the path she made in the culvert grass. Notice there is really no shoulder. This is very common out here. If you go off the road, you just go OFF the road.
Our hearts were racing after this event and I decided to just do nothing for the day.
There were fish to count and floating frogs to watch and waterlilies to admire. I had had enough excitement.

  2. Your photos are awesome! I love the lily pads and the droplets are wonderful! All lined up and ready to go!!!

I remember watching an accident happen like that. It was a VW bug with two young teenagers. They were gawking at my brother and drove straight into the culvert. We ended up rooting around in the wreckage looking for two teeth!!! We found them and they were put back in. (My mother worked for an oral surgeon at the time.)

  4. Glad she wasn't hurt or that she didn't have her child with her! We live just outside of town (about 2 miles)and it is considered rural as it is in farm country. We live off the main road and people fly down that road! The police have even parked on our street (where they can't be seen from either way on the main road) to "trap" speeders. To make things worse, our road is on a curve (both ways) and even if you sit there and wait to enter the main road to make sure no one is coming around the curves you feel like you're taking your life in your hands pulling out. My DH was almost side swiped one day from a guy flying around the curve and he swerved to the other side of the road to avoid hitting my DH!!

  6. These folks come through these accidents without injuring themselves because they're so relaxed. And the police recognize them, since they've seen them in previous accidents. These people don't want to have their blood tested for obvious reasons. I really like their "HIV defense," jumping out of their cars and shouting to everyone, "I have AIDS." They scare the police into not doing blood tests or coming anywhere near them.

Ok, that car bounced on it's roof and then landed upright? Whoa - a testament to the design of that car - truly amazing how not-squished it is!

  8. Scary beginning to the day. Thankfully, no one was hurt. And, you did well to actually notice the details and react well! I once saw a train derail, at night. All I remember is thinking, "Sparks!" Took me almost a full minute to tell someone to stop the train. Don't remember any noise, and it had to have been loud!

  11. wow, what excitement so early in the morning. Good for you that you took an easy day after that. Glad to hear that nobody got hurt; they must have had a guardian angel with them in the car!

  12. It's pretty common for the police to look for something "thrown out the window." When there's an accident without any real reason, they can suspect drugs or drinking as well as just plain stupid driving so they take a gander for liquor bottles or beer cans or little baggies with dope of one kind or another.

I'm glad nobody was hurt badly although I imagine your nerves were pretty shot after watching something like that.

  13. And how interesting that you had just given us the aerial view of your property one day earlier! As a pal of mine says, YJCMTSU. (I'll translate if you're not familiar with it.)

  14. I got broadsided once so hard that the drivers side wheel fell off my car. The cop asked ME if the guy was wearing a seat belt.........being the queen of sarcasm that I am, even in that kind of situation, I asked if he had somehow missed the perfect circle in the windshield where the guys head had smacked it. He was not amused.

  15. Our roads are the same here in Huntsville - no shoulder and even deeper culverts on the sides of the road. They are VERY dangerous in my opinion because there is no room to maneuver, esp. when a big logging truck is heading towards you and coming over the center line.
