My Favorite Sock

I couldn't wait until I finished this sock to show you that FINALLY I have figured out how to put a regular (afterthought) heel in a mitered square sock.

It fits like it should and that took some dinkin' around with the number of stitches in each diamond. The toe is the starting place and begun with a crochet cast-on so that I can do one diamond, and then undo the crochet and put live stitches back on the needle to make the underside diamond. The following diamonds are picked up from adjacent finished ones.

Except when one comes to the heel. One must leave a big square hole and knit onto the diamonds on the top of the foot and then around the ankle. Later the heel stitches are picked up around the opening and knit as usual (like a toe for top down socks).

Writing about knitting is like talking in code, even for those of us who do it. Most of the time I have to actually knit the thing before I understand what the directions mean.

I used three different yarns for this sock, trying to find a combination for the real thing. This pattern is something I have tried to figure out before, but with yarn that was too heavy for a sock and more like a slipper. To use sock yarn and to find the right number of stitches and the right gauge added to the puzzle. I will still alter this version for the real sock I intend to knit next. Smaller needles and more stitches per diamond will make the next one a less holey fabric.

  3. lovely, and your comment about how you have to do it to actually figure it out made me feel better about the part of my brain that so doesn't get the coded language you knitters use!

  4. That is totally brilliant, Melody! How satisfying and thrilling to figure out that elegant and lovely heel. I know exactly what you mean about having to knit the thing in order to write the directions; thought-experiments only go so far, and until you have the thing in your hands sometimes it won't make sense. I can't wait for the pattern! Maybe this will induce me to someday make a sock! For now I'm sticking to sweaters....!

  10. I am in awe that you could figure that out. I would have no idea where to start and would do more tinking than anything else. I have a question for you. Are the garter stitches comfortable to wear?
