Nouveau Ninepatch #2   1997   Hand dyed and commercial cottons, machine pieced and machine quilted, 41x31.5 $400

I was invited to submit a quilt for the book Easy Ninepatch Quilting for House of White Birches publishers in 1997. The person who called me suggested that I might have a few to choose from and any that I could write construction directions for would do.

“I don’t have any ninepatch quilts at the moment but I could make one today” I told her. I mean really, how hard could it be?

For starters I had this rainbow fabric which I cut into squares, 3”, 6”, 9” and 12”. Then I stacked them into pairs, making sure I had good contrast and then cut through twice vertically and twice horizontally, giving me two sets of ninepatches ready to sew together.

I made all the patches first for both quilts and then decided on different setting strips for each. #2 was the one I sent to the publishers, and then later I hand stitched #1 with our hand dyed pearl cotton threads. It was easy and fun. Writing the directions, not so much. As I did this task I realized that unless you had rainbow dyed fabric in your stash, the quilt could not be made to look like this.

PS. The workers fixed my walls and the patches are totally invisible. Hurray!!

Did I misunderstand or are you saying that you made these in ONE day? They are beautiful. I love the colors. I swear I am going to learn to dye my one fabric. Thanks for sharing...Kathy

  4. Sorry, but these pieces are to die for. I am going to have to get busy, because you have so many pieces I want to make... can you please come and take over my body for a few days... ughhh... one day. NEVER!

  5. Kathy of Beewitchinstitchin, I made the blocks in one day. Not both quilts. I made one top one day and quilted it the next, and then went on to the second quilt.

  6. These are so beautiful I can't stand it.

(And yet I don't think of you as a "black" person.)
