The collage areas were cut with a deckle blade rotary cutter (Fiskars) made for paper, but worked just fine on fabric, if it remained sharp. The fabric itself was dyed Pimatex-like cotton, very tightly woven poplin which we used to dye for sale. It takes the dye slightly differently because of it’s tight weave, leaving lots of air bubbles if it is dyed flat.

I think this was a new way of quilting for me at the time and I designed large areas to feature the stitching designs, in red thread. And as I recall I made the collage sections first and found a way to organize them into a design.

This is wonderful! I love the intertwining of the 2 figures. And the slightly mottled fabric in the figures is a great contrast to the solid colored background.

  5. The Blue! The Blue! LOVE this color - is it the Sabacron Blue? Do you remember? This is NOT the first time I wax poetic about your blues...I need to get off my hiney and dye some fabulous ones of my own...

  6. I too am enjoying seeing your past quilts. Love to see a large area of just quilting. Your stitches are perfect and I like the use of contrasting thread. It works perfectly with these quilts and the vibrant colors you use.

Interesting, that those squiggely cutters have been around so long. Hollyhocks 2 is absolutely beautiful. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of work you put into it.
Thanks for taking us on this 'memory lane' trip. Yours is the first blog I open each day, wouldn't miss it for the world!
