A Word about my Photos

image

This looks like a really good macro lens shot. But in reality it is just a regular picture, cropped.

Here is the original. I think I may have had the macro setting on at the time, but still, nothing fancy here. And next to it is my camera, which is now all scratched up from so much use. O I just see that this pic is of a model 750 and mine is really a 700. Anyway…

The point is that I have been trying to get better photos for the blog since being inspired by my pal Cindra, who is taking and posting fabulous photos. With the new blog program, Windows Live Writer,  I can actually post original sizes, which I am sorry to say takes you longer to download. In Blogger the resolution of the photos is automatically reduced to make it easier to download. So is it worth it to post higher resolution pictures or am I driving you nuts waiting to download the blog?

Let me know what you think and if you would rather I sacrifice the quality of the images for faster download.

And now I will say that my knee and the whole darn leg thing is history and I am back to thinking about rollerblading and biking and OMG dieting!

  1. Your blog always loads fast for me. I have it in the Google Reader so have never noticed a difference. It's my favorite of all the blogs I read and I'm sure that's due to all the pics! I forward it often!

  2. Your blog loads fast on my computer too. I have internet access that may be the reason????

Happy biking to you! Your photos load just bit slower - I love your photos and love your writing so I wouldn't care how long I had to wait anyway.. :)

  4. I don't mind the load time for the photos, besides, especially for the quilts, I like the higher resolution pics.

  5. If this rain EVER stops then we'll all go rollerblading.

Same for me - always loads fast, but would never mind the wait for the great pics. Glad you are done with the knee repairs and are moving on! I too so enjoy not only the quilts, but your writing is great...favorite blog in this house too.

  8. No problem with loading your excellent pix! I work on my pix in Photoshop and make the resolution 300 dps and make them about 6x4 in "image size" and then upload them to show up as "medium" on my blog! I hope dancing is on your list of things you'll be doing, too!!

  9. I guess it's just because I live so far out in the boonies ... no dsl or cable here.

With only slow old dial-up, your page is taking nearly 20 mins to load. That's a long time. To be honest, your pics have always looked great to me. I didn't notice they were higher resolution .. or perhaps I've just been blinded by my intense frustration, wondering why it's suddenly taking sooooo long to pull up your page and if it means my computer is dying or I've done something really stupid, or how late am I going to be getting to work today, because I keep hoping that it will load in just another minute!

I suppose it's some relief to know the issue wasn't at my end, but I do miss being able to get my Melody-fix first thing each morning.

Me too, same exact feelings and experience as Nikki.
I am a rural dial up reader, and been wondering why so slow to load. But I am glad to have an explanation at least, thank you.

  12. Even though I have a speedy internet connection, I've noticed the slower download. I've dealt with it by reading the post first and then going back to look at the photos, but I'd prefer to take in the photo first. I never noticed a problem with resolution on earlier photos.

  13. I never have a problem with it and I love the larger sizes. Gorgeous.

  14. That's a cool macro shot. Fancy crop! I have a fast connection, so file size doesn't matter too much.

Even with DSL it does take quite a bit longer than it used to. I wonder if the 72 dpi we get with our monitors really brings out the resolution at full size. It may be a wasted refinement. Sometimes I wait, other times I have limited time and must move on. Either way, they're beautiful.

  16. That's a nifty little camera. I have always said those little cameras have better macros for the money than the SLR's. You must have a steady hand, too. I love the detail on your shots, but that's just me. So glad you are feeling better.

  18. AH HA! I have wondered why it's been taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r for Fibermania to load - I thought I'd messed up my link, and have been typing in the address each mornine ... you'll have guessed I know very little about computers! Now I'll be more patient.

Glad the surgery's over, and you're home again,

Get better - and do what the doctor told you! - not 200% more, or only half of it!

  19. Well, these comments are a perfect example of both ends of the spectrum, those of us with a fast connection and those of us still on dial-up, poor things!

I have noticed an increase in the quality of your photos this spring - especially all your outdoor photos, so the difference in quality is coming through to me. But argh! If people are waiting 20 minutes for a blog post to load - yikes!

  20. I'm on the Aussie version of broadband but this 650KB+ photo still takes a while to load. As a general rule, the web is NOT the place to put high resolution/huge file size images. By all means, crop and refine photos before you post them but resize them too!

  22. Your site loads lickety-split for me and I love the hi-res photos. How can your knee be feeling so great already? That's fantastic - have a blast!

  23. Your page does take much longer to load, even with DSL. Your photos are always gorgeous anyway. Maybe you could reduce the image size a bit, but not all the way down to web size. Keep up the good work and inspiration!

Rule of thumb from a digital print person: balance input resolution with the capabilities of the output device. Screen=low res. Desktop printer=med res. Hi-end (production) printing device=higher res. National Geographic on coated stock (glossy paper)=best res.

  25. Yeah I've got DSL too but it's been slower to load for me and as a result I often don't wait around for them all if I'm in a hurry. Maybe you could make the web resolution pictures click-able so that if a person wants to see a higher resolution shot they could by clicking on the picture....
I love your photos by the way.. It's the thing that first drew me into your blog.

  26. I don't notice it loading slow, and love the nice pictures.
