April Gifts

image

A sampling of the ten blossoms from our Kousa. At sunrise the color seems more intense.

It turns out that we have three or more white dogwoods on the ‘estate’. The others are later blooming because they are in the deeper woods.

Crested Iris, covered in dew droplets. These buds appeared overnight. Not a sign of them yesterday, but then yesterday got very warm, and everyone seemed to have responded.

image For my sister Brooke. I planted these Lily of the Valley last year because she mentioned how much she loved them. Looks like they are loving being here, and are about to bloom for the first time. What is not visible is another shoot just coming up in front of this set. I truly hope they become ‘invasive’. I had them in my previous yard, but they were lethargic and kept themselves under control. What fun is that?

I love Hardy Geraniums (Cranesbill) and collect them in hybrid form for my garden. However these are natives and grow everywhere in our woods. They are budding and will open this weekend and poof, disappear. I am considering lifting these and putting them in my geranium collection in the front of the house.

I was all done with my nature walk when I noticed a flash of white across the road. Four deer, where they can run freely, and stay out of my garden.

  1. Dogwoods blooming are a special spring treat! Clouds of pink & white blossoms in the woods are so delicate. Good catch on the deer!!

  4. I love your spring photos! We moved from southern Kentucky to Lac Le Jeune BC last June and we love it here, but now that spring is on the calendar, we realize how much we miss all the color and flowers. We did live 10 miles from the Tennessee border and enjoyed all the same trees and flowers on our 27 acres that you're showing here. We're now in a dry climate which has it's own beauty--just not at springtime.

  7. Looks like Spring arrived there ahead of us this year. Our dogwoods are not blooming yet and the redbuds are just now becoming evident.
I love seeing what you are growing. Each day I look to see new green showing in the front garden and can tell that some of what I planted has begun to spread beyond the parent plants of last year and the two years ago plantings.
Have yet to look closely at the back garden mainly because I know that when I do I will have to do a lot of cleaning up, weeding and trimming back growth that didn't survive the winter.
Hope your knees get better soon. It's a reak bummer when you can not do what you want (art and gardening) without pain.
