I didn't sleep very well due to too much coffee and iced tea, so I woke up groggy and out of sync with the beautiful day. I had been thinking PAINT like I used to think QUILTS or GARDEN, which is to say that I have tuned my brain to the one specific wavelength in order to delve into all that I can about the subject at hand. When an appealing shape appears I ask myself about the shadows, the highlights, the reflections and it is nearly impossible to focus on things without doing this.
I tried to do something different, distracting myself by pulling out the wormy cabbage from the front gardens, but that action didn't satisfy. I had better go back to the studio and get this out of my system.
It's a sure bet that when one is out of sorts, nothing creative is going to work, so I just predetermined that this would be an exercise, a minor sketch, nothing important or as good as it should be. I set up an arrangement, lowering my table so I could look down a bit at the still life. Then I quickly blocked in the shapes, filled in with color and in no time at all I was surfing along at top speed.

Speed and art are not equivalents, but something put a power in my brush and everything came together easily. Sigh.
Hi there Melody,
ReplyDeleteI have been reading your blog for a number of years now. I usually read your blog on my weekends as I don't have more than a quicksilver moment through the week and to do your blog justice I like more than a fleeting jammed in minute of time. I have watched with interest your transistion of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual distance and I have been impressed at your strength and williness for change... You always seem to come through with an insight and smile...
I haven't commented for a very long time but to day when I opened up your page I was blown away by your artwork... I just love the vibrancy of your pieces and I can see your journey between fabric to paint...
You have in a strange way confirmed my own thoughts re my own journey...
chomp, chomp, sluuuuuurp,gulp!
ReplyDeleteWait a minute, this tastes like...paint!
