How High to Hang Art?
I am a firm believer that one should not have to crane one's neck to look up at art. It ought to be right at one's eye level. And if it is to be in an environment, like my living room, I want it be with me when I sit there. So today, being #7 in our Furniture Rearrangement Days, I found myself with an empty wall. Luckily I just happened to have some artwork that would work in that spot.
At first I hung it way too high.
Secondly I rehung it a tad too low.
Thirdly, like Goldilocks, I got it just right. The last one is about 3" higher than the second version.
If you click on the last picture you will see the spool of fishline that I used to string up this quilt. There are nails in the woodwork at the top of the wall, and they are stationary. The line can be lengthened or shortened easier than new nails in the wall for each hanging.
Now why are we rearranging furniture again? So we can sit at the dining room table and watch the birds closeup.

I really think the female is prettier than the male. Maybe not as vibrantly red, but subtly much more intesting.

I wish I had an a tad of your energy and talent. Totally agree with you on hanging art. Yours is just right. So Important. Also, love the peek at the sunny yellow bedroom-very nice.
Would love a Dave update every now and then. You two are just like family to me now.

isn't it beautiful the way the goldfinches undulate when they fly. I could just sit and watch them all day and Cindra's right they always say the males are prettier-for my money I think the subtle coloring of the female is really more lovely.
ReplyDeleteGrand bird pictures, I enjoy seeing the goldfinches as I only get to see them occasionally here in SW Virginia . Art definitely at viewers' eye-level (except when my dh is hanging pictures, then they go up high on the wall...sigh.)

ReplyDeleteI just read an article on hanging pictures yesterday. The designer indicated art should hang so your eyes meet it in the middle - between top and bottom. For most people the middle would be ~ 60 or so inches.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing from your teacher's heart, Melody. One question: I helped hang an exhibit once in which we used fishline as you do. How do you get the works to hang level. We found the fishline hard to work with and struggled to get the lengths right. It was quite time consuming. Help!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered an unused surface on which to display art: my rolling wire shelf has the ornamental zigzags all around it. If I hang some S- hooks from the top ones, I can suspend a corkboard from it. This can be moved as needed, thus providing a 'wall' for stuff that's in progress.
