Terry A. West
Chapter 7:

In which we go to town, and get inspired

Terry A. West

Brooke suggested we go to some galleries for visual feasting and while I planned on several we discovered one, not on my list, but better than the plan. Isn't that always the way? IN TOWN Gallery on Frazier Street in Chattanooga is an artists co-op and has lots of variety in paint, jewelry, glass, and fiber.

I stole these shots while Brooke and Glory distracted the saleswoman.

Lorri Kelly, above and below

I love this kind of massive messy painting and also the patterning and division of space in the landscapes above. I guess when I see paint I crave playing along.

Leslie J. Dulin
I know this one is hard to see, so I looked for more by this artist on the gallery site.
NOTHING. Nada! Wha?

Linda Kay White

Not a painting. A QUILT. There were several, really nice pieces, reminiscent of specimen illustrations but done so precisely in fabric and quilted exquisitely. I need to know this Linda Kay White, if only to make me improve my neatness factor. I went to her website, and duh, nothing is there either.

In this day and age, when digitals are everywhere (even your Grandma knows how to use hers) what keeps a visual artist from having a presence on the web? IT IS FREEEEEEE. For heaven's sake.

I swear some people are born without a marketing gene to their name.

  1. I love looking at that second Terry A. West. It's like looking at a view through fragmented glass. So cool. How does one think that way? So jealous.
I also love the Dulin. The colors and... do I see some polka dots? Letters, numbers, the #2 ball! A fun feast!

Glad that you found In Town Gallery. One of my favorite places to go in Chat.

Note to previous anonymous: blogging is supposed to be about the person writing the blog. Why don't you just stop reading what you don't care for rather than leaving snippy comments? So rude!

    www.susancarlson.com for more scarab quilts.
The best thing is to find a new, unexpected art and/or fine crafts gallery! It makes the heart sing...

  6. In-Town has some of the best work in Chattanooga by local artists. I have been invited to display my gourd art there, but with a full time job it's difficult, since they ask artists to work in the gallery once every three weeks (or pay higher fees). The artists there are wonderful. I especially enjoy one mixed media/collage artist, Caroline (can't remember her last name--I'll find it). She is extremely talented, supportive of emerging artists, and always willing to help.

  7. I found it--Carolyn Kaufman. I hope you have a chance to meet her one day. I have also admired Linda Kay White's quilts, but recognized them right away as being directly from Susan Carlson's book. I wondered about displaying art in a gallery that comes directly from a book, even if the book gives permission to use the patterns/ideas. Any thoughts on this?

  8. I love IN TOWN GALLERY in Chattanooga, and in fact, was invited to submit my Quilt Art last year at this time by Virginia Webb, an incredible photographer and exhibitor at IN TOWN...I passed the "jury" committee, but not the membership vote!!!...needless to say, this was very disappointing, especially having seen Linda White's Quilt Art on display in the gallery...I so appreciated knowing that this Gallery accepted Quilt Art in a Fine Art Gallery--the wonderful venue it IS!, in a city that is so supportive of the ARTS!!!

  9. I understand your disappointment, Colleen. I first saw Linda Kay White's work there about four years ago--the fish from Carlson's book. I was surprised, but also happy to find quilt art accepted. Virginia Webb told me they wanted a "body" of work--at least ten pieces--for the gallery. My "production" volume is low since I work full-time, so I work mostly on commission, one piece at a time. It works for me! I hope both you and Mel will consider applying to the InTown in the future!
