Adios My Darlings

Is this not the saddest picture of me imaginable?

My sister and niece are flying home today. We got up at 4:30 and stuffed ourselves and their mega-goodies into the car and at the very last minute broke a suitcase zipper and had to replace the whole thing with one of ours from its deluxe storage in the potting shed. It seems the girls made quite a haul here in the backwoods.

We drove the two hours to Nashville's airport and dropped them off for their marathon 26 hour flying day. Luckily the tremendo storms of last night had ceased and the sky was blue in spots and no delays were expected.

We make it a point to have NO TEARY GOODBYES but of course we feel it inside. It may be two years until we meet again, and that is a long time. No, we are not going to visit them in Singapore, for so many reasons.
But I think we all got what we wanted this visit. Glory got two trips to two Rumdums and loads of presents. I got to spoil her as the default Grandma Auntie Mel that I have become. Brooke and I connected over and over on so many points and it proves we can become real sisters even if takes practically a generation to overcome being raised by wolves. And we stuffed ourselves with verboten foods until we had to buy new pants just to be able to sit down.

The exciting new diet starts tomorrow. Stay tuned.

On just about every shopping venture I searched for the unfindable silverware caddy to drain the knives, forks and spoons which now that we live in a cottage we must wash by hand. I had one in the old house which was used to hold pencils and pens since I had two fine dishwashing machines. I sold it or gave it away, who knows? But now I cannot seem to find anything even remotely similar and it is driving me nuts. Short drive.

So to assuage my funk at losing my sis and niece I came home and sat down at the computer for a rudimentary search and after an hour, I gave up. And then it appeared in my 'Cabinet of Stuff I don't know what to do with'...

An over the sink strainer! This came with something, who can remember what? and was too short to fit over my supersized sinks. I kept it anyway and it gathered dust and other objects with no home and was moved here for some reason. Heehee. I am giddy with delight.
I think I'll go get a haircut and buy a magazine.

  1. Ooh, Mrs Mel, that pic of you is so very sad but it seems you had a whale of a time with your sister and neice that the memories will last til next time. Look on the bright side, you solved your strainer problem!
BTW, my sisters and I don't get together as often as we'd like (they're oversees too) but we are making a big show of it later in the year to celebrate some signigficant B-days this year, 50,45(me) and 40.

    Anyway, cheer up bub!

  2. Funny you should mention the haircut and magazine. I always enjoyed a pedicure and newspaper. Spoil yourself, you deserve it! Coming off such wonderful visit with your sister and niece is saddening. Thankfully we all have the internet. Thank you for sharing such personal thoughts of your family and feelings.

  3. Wow Melody, That photo of you reminded me of each time I had to leave my parents and it reminded me of looking out the window in the car that last time I saw my Father. Brought some tears!!

Each day you were together was so much fun - I had to rush home from wherever I was just to see what you'd done that day!!!

    My best!!

  4. The good news is that the Internet makes the distances not quite so bad. You can even use Internet phone to talk inexpensively. Not the same, I know, but.....

    Love the strainer!

  5. I thought of you many times over the last couple of weeks. Your posts were so happy and Glory was positively beaming in every picture. What a gift you have given her...wonderful memories!
It might take two magazines to settle back, though.

  6. Lordy, but that is a sad photo. A nearly empty home but a very full heart, yes? Tell ya what, make it 3 magazines (one of my favorite splurges) and a nice new houseplant. That should help immensely. And yes, the internet makes it sooo much better to be apart!

What a sad pic, it really brought a tear to my eye. I always get sad when I think of others having sisters. You are so lucky even in your sadness to have a sister.

I feel your pain, Mel! But what wonderful memories you have...not to mention all the pictures! I never had any brothers or sisters so it's hard for me to relate, but I have had some really sad times when someone I loved left me. At least you know you'll see them again and you'll keep in touch via the internet.

I say buy several magazines, a gallon of your fav ice cream, color your hair or give yourself a facial, take a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine and hit the sack early. You'll feel better tomorrow.
    :)

Sigh....I am sad all over again. My billet, Austin, came back Wednesday night from his home in Casper, WY. His dad flew in last night and, thankfully, United lost his suitcase so they couldn't leave until today. Watching Austin walk out the door about broke my heart. I couldn't watch him get in his car. Tonight his mom called to thank me, I started crying. Now you with this lonely picture.....sniff......thanks for the stuffy nose.

    Hugs...

  10. Aye! that could very well be me too...they say someone else always has it worst than you. I might never see my sis again. The last time was 3 years ago. She is getting older and the trip is too long. I can't blame her. You'll be ok Melody, get another pair of Addi turbos besides the mags.

The first thing I thought when I saw the photo was "how sad"...and that is before I read your caption. I teared up just looking at the picture. Without feeling the pain we can't feel the good stuff either.... Thank God for airplanes so they could get there in the first place!!!

  13. I am so glad you got your drainer, at last! I see the meat tenderizer in there, and know what you used it for and boy, that was so good! Haircut looks great.
