Storm Warnings

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. This is something I have been repeating since childhood. And it usually proves true. Saturday morning the sky was on fire and the whole world seemed pink.
The ducks swam in a pink pool.
And we waited.
Nothing happened all day.
But the temperature began to slowly slide down from the low 50's to 40 by dusk.
At 4 this morning I was wakened by shouting. Dave was quitting his job for the millionth time (in his sleep) and then I realized I was hearing him accompanied by the soundtrack of the roaring wind. Was this a tornado? I waited, holding my breath.
No. Just strong constant wind. I opened one eye and looked out my window, and in the near-dawn dark saw the trees swaying rhythmically, and heard the music of our porch chimes.
I pulled my bed hat down over my head and tried to go back to sleep. Then I realized that Dave needed to be reminded to take his meds, so I got up and went downstairs and woke him up again. Then I went back to bed.
But my mind was fully awake.
Did it snow?

There was a dusting on the porch and the leaves on the east side held some in a windless corner.
The thinnest possible snowfall was visible on the westside. The ducks huddled on the bank with their heads tucked under their wings. Good thinking. Brrr.
Thinking ahead Dave emptied the birdbath and brought it up onto the porch and filled it will birdseed. Now we can get a good look.

  1. Great shot of the flaming sky! Reminds me of some of your work.... hint, hint!
I love the photos of your yard and what momma nature and her creatures are doing. It is always interesting to see. We had a "bunch" of sandhill cranes fly over earlier this week... where was my camera?
Love the new piece. How festive!

  6. What an amazing sky!!!

My first year of not-working I would violently curse out people I worked with in my sleep as well. Peter became alarmed that I could string such profanities together as if I said them all the time...really a skill, I tell ya!
