What's on the other side?

Saturday morning Dave got ambitious and decided to climb the hill behind our house. It may be a small hill but it is pretty much straight up. I had to go along just in case. I was dressed for the occasion in sweatshirt, running shoes and pajamas. Dave wore his camo hat. Luckily the fashion police took the day off.

Note the bones coming out of the pocket

The weather was brisk and sunny, and almost immediately we were transported back in time to our childhoods. What is it about exploring the woods that does that? I found a deer skeleton, or parts of one, and stuffed the bones in my hoodie pocket. The rib bones kept falling out, so instead of holding onto branches to help me climb, I kept my hands on the bones.

Dave was singleminded about getting up the hill, so I scambled behind him. We had to stop several times to catch our breath, and let our calf muscles recoup. This is something for those more fit than us.

The meadow at the top of the hill was a surprise. I was sure we would just find another larger area of forest. But after we crossed this area, there was more to explore.

Rock outcroppings which made us remember cowboy and Indian games.I would have spent my entire summers up here when I was a kid, had I the opportunity.

The lichen is so lacy. What a superb color scheme.

We spent an hour or so scouting out the hillside, looking for animal homes, or tracks, or something to collect. The wind was a lovely companion, but it was chilly and I was thinking about breakfast, so we started back.

Our pond in the distance was a welcome sight. My legs were soon grateful to be walking on level earth.

  2. I remember all that, but I don't remember bringing bones back. Bones? What will you do with them? Oh, and lose that Carolina sweatshirt. I will send you a Duke sweatshirt if you need one. LOL!

Why was there a meadow? Is there grazing cattle? Is that all still your land? Questions questions.....

  4. What a great place for adventures! You could be pirates or indians or lost on a desert island or homesteaders or bandits or... anything! Woods are the best play places... ever!

  5. Our land ends at the top of the hill. The meadow looks as though is was planted with grass. The grass has gone to seed, but it must be mowed often as it is only about 10 inches high. There is a farm to the east, and we do hear cattle mooing, but there was no evidence of cattle in this meadow, if you catch my meaning.

Your pictures are outstanding and I need to get a new camera for my adventures...Please tell me what kind you have... who carries it? Can an amateur operate it? I love the hills, your new house and the whole continuing story. Even the chickens...you are so good with even the tiny details....Thanks so much for sharing. Liz Armstrong

Wow. Really brings back great memories. I really miss those days of roaming the woods and meadows, climbing the rocks and trees....wish I had the energy to do it now when I would really appreciate what I am seeing.
