Two weeks til closing!

I went to our bank for a mortgage and had the banker look at the blog so she could see the property. She wants to visit. ha! Today we will sign the papers and will have a 30 year mortgage. This is all going so well. Our accountant Karen is a dream and she is setting up the payments from our account that will pay the monthly bill for us directly. No stamps, no paying attention. Sigh. Wonderful.

After much back and forth discussions we have decided to get the biggest moving truck available. We will now begin culling and moving stuff out of the house and into the garage as a staging area. Dave has posted some furniture on Craig's list and hopefully someone will come and pick it up.

I must be ruthless in eliminating duplicates in the kitchens. Not only will I be down to one kitchen, but half the size. This will test my mettle.

I need more Rubbermaids.

  3. Big big tip.
Get white bin bags and black bin bags. Black ones for rubbish and white ones for things you want to keep. Never use one for the wrong purpose. Ask how I know this....

My house cleaning mantra has always been, "Would you pay to move this thing cross-country on a van?"
If the answer is "No," out it goes, in theory, anyway.
Now you get to put my theory to the test!
A fresh start is so liberating...

  5. Wow, you guys really got the ball rolling in a hurry! Good luck weeding things out... from past experience I can say just start with the stuff you can't possibly live without and go from there. Have fun and try not to stress too much!

Instead of a truck, think about getting a POD. With the truck you pretty much end up getting and knoicking yourselves out loading it in a day or two. With a POD you can get it delivered and load it as you pack stuff up (I packed boxes to the point where I no longer had a garage or dining room- it was a major PITA). Then, when you are ready to go, the company picks it up and has it transported to your new location and you unload it at your pace. Very civilised.

Will enjoy watching your move after just having gone thru it myself (good grief, twice in less than 12 months). I was amazed that, despite the fact that I sent a fully-loaded 14' U-Haul truck here, I still needed to go out and buy so much (am still waiting for delivery on a recliner, 2 tables and a futon and still need dressers, bedframes and misc. little tables....)

I'm concerned... maybe I don't understand the US mortgage system as I live in the UK... but you've taken a 30 year mortgage at age 59? Are the banks crazy or just sadistic?

Anyway, good luck with the move - your new house looks great!

Mike Roberts (husband of Margaret M)PS I really like your paintings.
