Orbit Series #4

Orbit Series #4
12x16"
Acrylic, inks, carbon and colored pencils
on 100% rag Arches watercolor paper

The return of color, and not a minute too soon. O so much more fun, but y'know, I needed to go through the Valley of the Dark in order to get to this place in the sun.

Not as overwrought or as overworked as the previous three either. My confidence is starting to show, at last. The thing I am loving the most, is probably going to be my downfall, and that is all the teensy details that I must add at the end. It's almost like glitter, or sequins or beads on a quilt...which would make me gag if I put them on my quilts. But you see that white line? I think that made the whole thing work. Along with the black lines showing through from the initial sketch. The backbones of the piece, reiterated. But I am talking about the teensy white lines and dots and boxes. I can't stop myself from adding those. They announce the areas I want to highlight.
O heaven help me, I am having a blast with this. No angst, no deadlines, no slide taking, nothing but learning from the experience of the previous piece.
But what about framing? Ugh. Anybody out there have a snappy solution that will make me sit up and take notice? I do have two IKEA frames that would work with this size painting. I need some mat board, with windows cut the right size.
Coupon...where's that coupon?

  1. Aaaaahhhhhh.... now THAT is a Melody Johnson painting.

The white line really emphasizes the movement thru the painting.

  2. This piece has impact! I like the cleaner lines....the white lines contribute to that.

Are you sure you want to frame this? Why not paint the sides of the canvas and let the painting speak for itself with no hemming in of the edges?

Painting in neutrals is like phots in B&W...gets to the basics quickly. Color is definitely your domain!!

  5. I LOVE this one (tho I did like the black & white too) - your colour instinct is fantastic, and I love that you have the confidence to trust your instincts. The white highlights are just right.

I'm loving watching this process unfold. It's when you use color that you can FEEL what you are thinking. I love it!
