Ultramarine

Ultramarine
19x27" Acrylic, Prismacolor pencils, inks, paint pens
I am calling this one Ultramarine, because it is the first time I have used that color paint, and want to remember which one makes that almost purple-blue color.

I decided to enlarge a section of the previous painting Thursday and make it simpler, less detailed. Using a new sheet of water color paper, taped and wet stretched to a piece of foam core, I sketched the layout and layered the paint on. While I was glad to have a brighter colorway to work in, I found the ungessoed water color paper difficult to control. Even tho it was stretched it buckled under the paint, causing puddles, which annoyed me.
The effort to control the paint was stifling my flow. Since for me process is so much more important than product, I was mostly not happy all day.
I kept thinking, I shoulda shoulda shoulda used canvas, or gessoed the paper or something else.
The resulting painting is alright, but not as free and loose as I was experiencing before.
So today I gessoed three paper surfaces, and on one I even used quite a bit of heavy gel medium for texture. It will take a while for that one to dry and become paintable. In the meantime I have stuff to do---quiltingwise. Gathering up all the quilts I will need for samples and exhibits and for sale. Packing fabric and Wonder-Under and blades. And then What to Wear???

Tomorrow we are hanging the Chicago School of Fusing Faculty Exhibit at the new Schaumburg Convention Center. It is the Greater Chicago Quilt Expo, at which I will be teaching Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
And tomorrow my modem is due to arrive and by Wednesday I will be able to blog at home. O the luxury!
