Channeling Nancy Crow
It is midnight and I am holding Nancy's new book in my hands. Tiny imperceptible electric currents are running through my arms and up into the ol' noggin'. All that I imagine is altered by the pictures in this volume. I am entranced by the line drawings beside each finished work. My need to make line drawings is irresistible. I draw a stacked design and feel the urge to make the sections into strip piecing. Lightening bolts! Organ music. The smell of burning electrodes!
All my golds to green colors must be laid before me, arranged in strips. Must. Cut. Strips.
Ah, a feeling of satisfaction floods my being and I can go back to bed.
The next morning, 4:30 am...I cut and fuse more strips, assembling a top with speed and determination before the spell wears off. Almost at the denouement, the magic evaporates and I am left alone with my own meager talents.
Something is wrong with this piece. It lacks the spark. Looking down at my feet I spy a sliver of waste cut strips. Could it work? I arrange it as a frame.
It is an afterthought, something Nancy would not do.

ReplyDeleteGlod, I love your description of working feverishly "before the spell wears off". Yes! it is just like that! The inspiration grabs hold of you and you are in the trance until the dopamine runs out and you are left with yourself.

I can relate to having finishing something while the spell is on. I like green and purple together, and your addition looks great. That is a very bright flourescent green, at least on my screen.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm in the absolute minority on this one but I think that final purple frame detracts from the quilt as a whole. I'm not sure why. I do love, love, love the colors, though, and I love the quilt as it appears before that is added.
ReplyDeletewe already have a "Nancy"..I think you're every bit as talented. She just got discovered sooner. Please don't take this the wrong way(cause You know I loves me some Melodywork) but if I wanted to I could knock out a "Nancy" and I'm no Melody. You expand your ideas and create visual explosions-After reading Nancy's book I can't help thinking she needs to jump out of the comfort zone and get a bit excited again. Could it be(in her case) that we've gotten a little too impressed with our fame?

I want to take a page out of your book and be able to go into my studio and have all those luscious colors to use up.
