I never intended to do a representational painting, let alone a painting of horses, but my gesture drawing that I began this painting with, was like animals in motion and eventually as I formed it, it became these horses. I hated it and put it away for a over a week. In the meantime I painted Adobe, and then I realized what I could do to salvage this painting. I could add contrasting color outlines.
I just attacked it with abandon and immediately the bad discarded painting took on a different character and I knew I was on to something.

My poor drawing notwithstanding, I began to add color that removed it from the realm of the natural and brought it into the imaginary, and graphic. While it was my intention to paint with gestural brushwork and lots of blurred edges, I totally let go of those expectations and just allowed myself to indulge in the direction the painting needed to go.

At my side were images of two painters whose work inspires me, John Nieto and Malcolm Furlow. I saw their work in Santa Fe and in books and online since my return. I responded to their work, specifically because of the line and color, which are so like my own sensibilities.

I only have one word to say: GALLERY! Actually, I have more...but... And, as much as we love it "horse people" will go bonkers...they can't have enough horse art, etc. Keep it going...Bonnie

  16. We're running out of adjectives here! I tend to be a bit afraid of bright colors, but I love what you do with them, wow!

  17. You have let loose that inner painter who has been shut up for so many years. Trust yourself, not us. You are a very fine artist, not limited to any medium and not to be limited by ties that bind.

MAGNIFICENT!! Having lived in Arizona for a number of years with many visits to Santa Fe, this really reminds me of the southwest art. I love it.
