The Big Switch

This is the 'after' shot. I couldn't bring myself to show you the 'before', because you would lose all faith in me. I had almost lost all faith in me, so I know. These shelves are in the garage, not a place I hang out in. So stuff gets lodged there, for like ten years, unmoved, unquestioned and mostly unneeded. Then the impending visit of my sister and niece got me motivated enough to finally do something about this mess. That and an all day rain.

The famous guestroom closet contents had to go somewhere or there would be no place to put the stuff my sister will bring for her month long stay. So the garage shelves were to be the place.
All my remaining quilts of the last 24 years are lodged here, plus 1/3 of my yarn stash, carefully encased in plastic zipper bags, plus numerous bedspreads, comforters and ufo's.

The big transfer only took the entire morning.
Look out landfill, INCOMING!!!
I tossed out so much stuff, filling three trash bins and three extra bags. The rest was recycleable or salvageable and was consolidated into six Rubbermaid boxes.

I covered it all up for the sake of keeping the light of day and the massive amounts of dust that accumulates on things when they are ignored for years at a time. I had just tossed out this old piece of black felt, and knew exactly which garbage bag to wade through to extract it.

Now my guests can put their stuff in the empty closet. I had four leftover Rubbermaids which will act as drawers and allow easy removal of whatever they need to get at. It's a good thing. I kept my yarn in there, on the top shelf. High enough not to be in the way, and yet still accessible for me. I am using it up, you know. Brooke and Glory will be here, arriving from Singapore, in ten days. I am so thankful for the nudge.

Then yesterday after concluding that massive organization project, I set about to update my schedule for the rest of this year, and next year too. The new schedule is posted in my sidebar. I was just telling my friends that I am pulling back and working less next year.

NOT SO.

I had no clue how many invitations I have accepted. I better make the quilts now or there won't be anytime next year. Yipes!

Your garage and closet look great! I checked out your schedule, and was pleased to see you'll be in Switzerland in 2007. I have arked my calendar already. I hope that I will be able to attend ;-) Any chance you'd make a stopover in Germany?
