The underpainting was more explicit, but I wanted to obliterate the details of the original and I am pleased, so pleased to have let go of my precious darlings.

Know what Ms Mel? I think you should stop quilting and just paint! Just wonderful. Bet your 2 friends will be truly amazed!

At the risk of being stoned by your admirers, I am a little disappointed in this one.

  7. It is painted in oils.
And to the dear honest Anon. I feel your disappointment, and understand what you must have expected was not what I painted. I am working on letting go, and for me this is a big triumph. I can already paint accurately, representationally, but it is so 'old hat' for me. I want to venture into the abstract much more and will continue to get looser and looser as I progress. I consider the paintings I am making all to be 'homework'. Considering the fact that I have NEVER been this reckless in the past, please don't hold me back now! I am on a roll!

My comments weren't meant to hold you back at all. I wasn't expecting anything representational, either. Didn't expect to see Tommy or Frieda as we've come to know them through you and the photos you've posted.

To the contrary, I didn't feel like you let go enough. I almost felt like the painting was a little stilted compared to the freedom of your latest quilts. Maybe stilted isn't the right word. I think maybe cautious describes what I saw better. Like okay, I can go this far but that's it.

Since you say these are your "homework" maybe I was expecting too much (and then you get into the whole argument of whether the viewer has the right to have any expectations of the artist. I'm no art expert so maybe what I feel holds no weight but I was kind of expecting this painting to really "fly."

All this is not said to be mean or anything because I have loved your quilts for a long time and I love your blog, too. You told me earlier this year in an e-mail that your newest quilts were about RELEASE even before you had the courage to write it on your blog. I guess I wanted you to go for broke. Leave the parachute behind, trust your heart and your soul, Melody Johnson, and fly!

  11. It "feels" like a walk on the beach to me ... a sunny warm day, a stiff breeze, and the comraderie of two friends walking and talking. I've been there, done that ... and it's all there in your painting for me.
