This quilt made itself

I was merely the facilitator. When I am finished with a new piece I have to clear my table of scraps and reorganize them to go into the scrap boxes. This is a relatively new resolution on my part, to have some control of the tons of wonderful and useful debris that results from making a fused quilt top.
I try to gather them in some fashion so they are retrievable or related to the stuff in the particular boxes of other scraps. As I grouped like colors together I found this leftover leaf block from two years ago and several pieces of warm greens that went with the leaf color. Hmm...Do I have a minute? It was only 5 pm and I had to make dinner (popcorn and Screwdrivers) so I leapt into creation mode.
Bing bing bing! The top was done. I reached into my cabinet where the batting scraps were kept and found a piece just dizactly the right size. This was a miracle. Or good luck, you decide. I fused the top to the batt and went upstair to 'cook'.

After dinner, I grabbed my embroidery stuff and got into my bed (what is the point of being cold one second longer?) and watched L&O reruns until Dancing with the Stars came on.

The other day Deb had posted some really cute quilts with seed stitching and ever since then I have been dying to do some too. This is done with DMC perle cotton size 8 and 5. There is only the top and batting at this point. I will pillowcase the top today and I'll do the rest of the quilting by machine. Perhaps I will find more hidden quilts in those scraps before they all get put away.

  1. Love it... how could I not with the green and the purple? Hey, when I use variagated perle cotton (or floss) I'm always frustrated that the colors don't change fast enough. Then it seems I'm stuck on the one color in the blend that I don't like and it goes on forever. Is that just me? Do you have a solution? Thanks for mentioning my blog again. I'm glad you liked my little postcards!

  2. What a wonderful quilt! My favorite bits: the mixed stripes, the purple circles, and the colors!

Check you out! Having your cake and eating it too ;-) You can make fabulous quilts to satisfy the insatiable artist in you AND use the scraps to make scrumptious little things like this to satisfy your desire to make marketable things too. How cool is that?

  5. The quilt is gorgeous, natch, and only you could churn out lovliness like that out of your scrap drawer in the 2 hours before 'cooking' dinner.

That was my fave part, btw - popcorn and screwdrivers!!!lol

  6. As always, more pretty work from you!

Thank you for posting the other day about how to create a button. I just started a blog the other day, and it was great to have someone spell out how to do it.

  7. This is sweet - love the colors. Isn't it wonderful when things make themselves. Maybe you could leave so scraps out on the table and night little elves would come make them into quilted shoes!

  8. Melody can you explain what you mean when you say you pillowcase the top (or point me to a post where you might have done so already)??

I love the colours that you use in your quilts - so vibrant and alive.

  9. This is charming, Melody! Gee, how can I train MY fabric to make things by themselves like this?!

Ok, the muted tones are stunning. I'm seeing a pastel pallet. Calming, and stunning. I also like the 'heavy' color mix.. The bright and the bold, ala your early works. Wow, multilingual!!
