27 years ago today

We were scared out of our minds.

If I smiled any harder, my face would surely break. Dave kept talking and therefore we never got a good picture of his beaming face. Notice the sideburns and moustache. Very late 70's.

I made my dress, actually I made two dresses, but chose this one over the white velvet tent dress I originally made. This one was white crepe and cotton lace. Perfect for the subzero day we were wed. The jacket was a bolero trimmed in the crepe and the dress was two pieces, a bias front tank and flared skirt, cinched so tight at the waist that I could barely breathe. My shoes were white strappy heels. What was I thinking?

I was thinking how lucky I was to have a second chance at marriage. I was 30 (for a few more days) and divorced for almost four years, and Dave was 23, the little darling. He was a meat cutter and I was a meat wrapper, could you get more romantic? When we married we both had apartments with leases, so we lived at his til the lease ran out and then we lived at mine and then we found another one, so in our first year we moved three times.
It seems I never mentioned my artistic inclinations and my intense desire to quit my horrible job and go back to school. This was my devious plan from the start, evil laugh, and soon I talked my way into this reality and was in school by the next year.

No doubt that my inlaws saw me as a gal that took advantage of their son, and disapproved of me quitting my 'good job'. I had to prove myself to everyone.
It all seems like ancient history now.

The secret to our long and happy marriage is that we give each other a break when we have bumps in the road. That means forgiveness, understanding, and an appreciation of our own faults and mistakes. I can't believe how peaceful our relationship is. I am a lucky duck.

  10. You both looked great! And neither of you really look all that different now, except that it seems strange to see you with longer hair and no glasses.
