Barred Circles #2
Hand dyed cottons, fused, hand embroidered, machine quilted.
17x20.5"
Once in a great while I will hear from a collector who wants to purchase an already sold quilt. That is what happened last week. The quilt she wanted (pictured below) is called Barred Circles and was 35x39" and sold for $700. She gently asked if I would consider remaking it. I agreed and offered to make it half the size for half the price. She agreed and I got to work.
It's always challenging to review a previous idea and see what I could do to make the process more interesting and still be faithful to the original. Lucky for me, I was given free reign to make color changes, since I was certain not to have exactly the right fabrics for the remake.
Being smaller, the scale of everything had to be reduced, and I feel it works just as well at this size as it did in the larger size. I found lots of very close colors, but then let myself find new ones that were more in keeping with my feel for the work. There is more harmony in the second one (IMHO) than previously.
I am happy to have had the opportunity to revisit a good ol' piece of my art.

Wow! A real colour burst!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun, happy quilt! (But it's just 1/4 the
ReplyDeletesize of the original).
I just checked your flickr page on your recommendation, and BOY, what a body of work! Just a stunning visual display of painting and quilting. Thank you for posting all of this. And congrats on the new car! :-)
