Garden Changes

Up on the mountain we are about a week behind the valley, and our redbuds are just starting to bloom. It's this time of year when I  have the most enthusiasm for the garden and when I find out just how old my joints are becoming. I had to enlist Dave in my transplanting scheme.
"We" moved two hydrangeas to this bed and now I feel like we have some real structure or foundation for the back garden. The big purple-y pink hydrangea (#1) will anchor this section. In a few short weeks I'll be adding some bedding plants, so we won't have so much visible soil. I bought Preen for the first time in my garden life, and I plan to use it liberally to prevent weed seedlings. My knees need the edge on weeding.

More dependable hosta are making an appearance. It is so amazing how their tips rise through the hardest crust. These days they grow at least three inches every day. Stand back!

Celandine Poppies have reseeded all over the shade garden and where once were two purchased plants I now have nine. I love their flowers and leaves. The European Ginger is surrounded by the Celandine upshoots.
Every good garden has a compost pile, and ours is huge. Chester loves the smells. The greenery is the discarded phlox, which I am sure will make this a colorful spot this summer. Grrrr.

My sister Brooke, et famille, bought this house just yesterday! I am so happy for them and so happy that they are staying here in Tennessee. Yay!!!

  1. OMGosh, Brooke's house is so darn cute! I'd say they are puttin' down roots...lucky for both of you! And, your yard is looking mighty fine again. Maybe Brooke would like some phlox.... It doesn't need mowing does it.

Don't forget that red bud blossoms are edible; they look and taste great in salads.

  6. It's so nice to see photos of green and growing plants and flowers. Here in Minnesota, we still have snow!
What a nice house---yes, it does seem like Brooke and family are putting down roots. How great that they will stay close to you!

  7. Oh, how I love your garden posts! You really have done a wonderful job, and I hope your joints will feel better as the weather warms up! And I'm glad that Brooke and her family are staying close... love their house!
Compost question - do you leave it uncovered like that? I have a bin which I need to replace, and am trying to decide how I want to do it... bin, pile, etc. We get a lot of wind here, so I'm afraid leaving it open would just spread everything around when the winds blow!
