It's Always Somethin'

Dave's sister Carol and her husband Dan are coming next Tuesday, from IL, for their first ever visit to our little country home. Of course Dave chose this time to paint the whole house a new color.
It is a very light limey green, sorta Lime Frost and I am so happy with it. I doubt it will be finished by next week, but no matter. Everything here is always a work in progress. It keeps him healthy, (and outta my hair!) This is the first house that I have lived in that is my choice of color. The others have been brown, beige, and this was gray, so not me.
Already the lighter color (first coat) has made a huge difference in brightness. And it makes the house look extra cottagey.

This side faces west ( the guest room) and the original builder seemed to have lost interest when he got to this side. There were many gaps in the clapboards and they were filled with caulk, not neatly I might add. Dave dug it all out, sanded and replaced some of the warped boards and Mike, our hired man, put new framing around the windows since they were unframed and just caulked. What is it with men and caulk? This is the most time consuming side, but there will be death defying painting when they get to the upper story. Dave says he has a belt and hook system imagined to keep Mike from sliding off the slippery metal roof. O yes, it will be Mike who goes up there. ha!
The porch floor and stairs will remain the 50 shades of gray they currently are, and the trim will get another coat of white paint to finish it. No rain in the forecast. Phew!
I am off to the quilt group today, in minutes and I have high hopes. I'll let you know all about it.

UPDATE:
I had a great time at the quilt group! It was a dream come true. My dh had seen them before me, during the summer,  and had 'warned' them that I was an art quilter and offered the url of my website too. So when I walked in, and introduced myself,  they asked, "Are you the artquilter?" I tried to be humble and demure. Lost cause. But they were really welcoming and so friendly and I could tell a lot of them were from other places and knew what it was like to be new.
There was a big quilt on a frame and chairs all around so I sat down, having thought ahead to bring a thimble, scissors and my fave needle and put in a few atrocious stitches. I mean I was a like fish out of water when it came to working on a frame again. Haven't done that since 1981.
Then they set up another quilt on a second frame and that one had thinner batting so I could do a less embarrasing job. But still, I vow never to ruin anyone's quilt with my handstitching again.
The group, if all the members are in attendance is EIGHT. Eight???? I could easily fit them all in my studio at once. Actually my studio is larger than the meeting room. And of course THIS IS JUST WHAT I WANTED. Ten minutes from home, lots of laughing already, and interested and eager women. Hurray, huzzah, yippee!

  6. Beautiful! Love it, and how nice is it to have a husband that gets the projects done? I'm jealous since we can't even get the one we are doing done because of caregiving obligations. Kind of like the cobbler's house.

  7. Funny - my computer monitor has always read your house colour as blue (not gray). Love the new colour--it's almost the same as my house!
When Dave and Mike are done, please send them over. And I hope your tribe awaits you at the quilt group.

  8. Love it :) Just the perfect color...for you and the house :)

BTW, tell Dave and Mike to be extra careful on those ladders. My DH fell from a 10' ladder in June and shattered his left ankle. He had 4 surgeries in 10 weeks and he still isn't in rehab. It's been stressful for both of us. I almost lost him to a nasty infection and sepsis. Be careful guys!!!!

  10. What a beautiful colour! I would not have the guts to choose anything other than the norm.. We just repainted and used a dark red which I think will look awesome with the snow we have 9 months a year.
Have fun at the quilt meet!!

Gorgeous color! Love what it does to your house. Can't wait to see it finished, and especially to see it next year with all your flowers blooming.

  12. Love the color! And looks like they are off to a fast start with the painting. My dh and I painted our house and garage ourselves 3 summers ago, and it took the entire summer - but we only had evenings and weekends. Looking forward to your quilt group report!

  13. I so get your experience and desire for a small quilt group. I've been blessed to belong to two different groups along my life's journeys. We are still BFF forever. Have fun. Encourage and enjoy each other.

  14. I love the colour too, I think it makes the house look bigger.

Glad you had a good time at the new quilt group. I imagine you will have them in your studio fusing art quilts very soon ;-)

I am laughing. My dh decides to shampoo the carpet in the entire family room a few hours before guests arrive. I broke out the white house mold 2 years ago and we painted our house a deep blue green which I love. Jessica

Love the new house colour! Now, with a few splashes of hot pink paint for accents, it will look truly "you"!

  18. I love the new colour but then I am a sucker for light (or bright) lime - my craft room at home is a very similar colour!
My DH managed to put caulk across his new shoes, the shoes he was not meant to wear if he did work on the house... though to be fair, it was not his fault the caulking tube split and glopped on his foot.
Glad to know you seem to have some new quilting buddies! I am still getting that side of things organised, but have some knitting buddies (and a yarn store only three blocks away....).

  19. That's wonderful, Melody! It is ALWAYS great to find a group of women who know how to laugh.
Oh and I agree with you on your choice of paint - very cottagey looking, light inducing. NICE!

a few poor stitches won't show in the overall quilt probably so don't worry so much
