Starring Yellow

The solution to what to do with all those yellow blocks was so simple! Just make a big contrasting center block and surround it with the smaller ones. After making the star block I had only to add six more of the log cabins to have enough to finish the top. 47x59" before quilting.

Yes, I know one of the points is cut off. What do you want, perfect?
I have an idea to add oomph to this so-so star. I will post it when I get to that part.
The vast majority of the fabrics in this piece are prints that were donated or that I purchased from my pal Wanda of Exuberant Color, who has more fabric than anyone I know.
As mentioned, the star was inspired by Carmen Rose who has just put up a WONDERFUL star tutorial on her blog. Now she tells me!
I started running out of yellow fabrics, so I added a few that aren't and of course I like these blocks the best.
So that pretty much was my New Year's Day. That and bread making, two loaves and some more furniture rearranging. I am still not totally happy with the furniture placement...maybe I will figure it out today.

  1. WOW! That blue star is great for accenting the yellow blocks. What a fun piece.

Mel, I hope this isn't already permanent because it is just plain wrong! (the purple/blue square)
    There must be another solution!

  3. That star is just the "pop" that does it! I can't wait to see what you do to "add oomph!"

  4. I like the ones with the additional colors, too! A little bit of this, a little bit of that! How fun!

Melody, hmm. the blue/purp background behind the star just doesn't seem to work. I'm not a person who puts these things together on a regular basis, so I can't go into any technical reasons why - - it just doesn't seem to flow. IMHO. Thanks.

  7. To each his own opinion, however, I learned a long time ago to make quilts that make ME happy whatever anyone else thinks. I just love your improvisational piecing. It's so freeing! Keep it up!!!

I LOVE that a star point is cut off! It totally goes with the slight 'wonky' nature of the star.

I've decided that, from now on I'll make all my blocks slightly off kilter. You know, on purpose, obviously 'dancing' stars, etc., to highlight my natural talent for cutting off points.

    LOVE it! Carry on!

Scrappy quilts are difficult to understand... often there is no place for the eye to rest. Sometimes there is no differentiation in color value. I have noticed this with many scrappy quilts. --Annette

  11. Melody, you are such an inspiration! I think the first thing I am going to work on this year is a piece that is fun and makes my heart zing, with loads of color. Don't know what it will look like, but I am taking a page from your book, pulling from my BRIGHT stash remnants and going to play. Hopefully my sister and mom will leave early enough tonight for me to start later this evening!

Ohhhh... I love Starring Yellow :-)

  12. Wow, well that certainly is off the beaten path for you. But I'm really loving it! I also have ideas of how to add oomph, but maybe they're the same as yours...
    anyway, love the blue!

  13. The blue parts have become so radiant, it seemed impossible for the darkest colours to shine most brightly, but somehow you managed. They pop out, maybe this is what the first Anonymous meant to say by "not flowing". -- But sometimes craft turns into art through the disturbing bit, set on purpose (I'm not yet quite at ease with the angles of the star). Something irregular that catches the eye. -- My husband thinks it is art! He loves it.

Yes Eva, you have noted one of my concerns about it 'not flowing'. Thanks. I am sure my comment came across as harsh, it wasn't meant to be, it was more of a wail.

Now I think it should probably be a blue star gradually built up and supported by the oranges and yellows. But even that may be wrong.

Other than that, I just love it being a quiet, yellowly orange scrap quilt.
