White on White

I was cleaning off my table from the last painting when it dawned on me that these white garlic cloves would be a challenge to paint, against the white table top.

The light was giving the skins an iridescence that was enticing, as well as multicolored. I had to give it a try. I found gold, turquoise, lavender and orange in the whiteness of the papery coats.

And then I broke one open and made pesto for lunch!

Have you thought about some compositions where there is less ground? I've been enjoying all the paintings -- you're very talented -- but sometimes, when I look at the detail photos, I think they're even better than the original. Maybe something about getting really close to the subject that appeals to me. I like both detail photos in this entry because it's possible to see all your amazing color choices in the closeup.

  3. Absolutely lovely. I love all the subtle colors. Next you will have to get some of those garlic bulbs that have that hint of purple.

  5. Who'd have thought there were sooo many colours in white! I'm loving your paintings - as much as your quilts. I really enjoy watching checking each day to see what your next subject is. You see beauty in what many of us (myself particularly) pass over everyday: the dyeing leaves of a peach, a bunch of garlic or a blue (or is it red, or maybe now it's green) teapot. Oh and I'm very envious of your garden!

  6. Melody, if you ever decide to go "commercial" and would like an agent, let me know! All of your work is excellent, promotable, and very sellable!

PS: In the meantime (before you get to the really bigtime with your new agent-LOL) would you mind sharing what medium you use to do the very thin outlines and the thinner hatchings and squiggly lines?
