Sometimes a bit of insomnia can be useful. I lie in bed thinking about doing something more graphic, and watercolor-y without using watercolor paper. In the morning when I got down to it, I sketched the pears and calligraphy in graphite and watercolor pencils. Then I painted the sketch with matte medium and water, making the watercolor pencil permanent. A wash with thinned acrylic in a watercolor technique filled in the color. Then out came the oil pastels (Cray-pas) which melt with a brush dipped in odorless thinner. Finally a wash of thinned oil paint and it is done.

This is a painting that could be stretched on 11" stretchers or just slipped in a frame like this from IKEA. The mat opening is 11.5", perfect!

  3. This technique sounds like a lot more WORK, but the results are wonderful. What will you think of next to delight us?

It is amazing how you can switch from one technique to the other and get awesome results from both. I like this one too.

Now, that is fabulous. I'm a sucker for text on art and I love the casual look of this artwork.

    I love this one too.
It is more like your free spirited colourful bright quilts.
While the others are more like a traditional quilt...your technique is amazing and admirable and I do like these as well, as I like traditional quilts ...but like your signature original Melody quilts, this watercolour really speaks to me in a delightful way. Linda in BC
