Strawberries

Strawberries Sold

Oil on primed canvas, 10x10"

and now back to our regularly scheduled programming:

I painted a plate of yummy strawberries, The little one in front is from our own garden, with a huge chunk missing from the backside, and the other two are monsters from California, where they really know how to grow BIG strawberries. The missing chunk from our homegrown one tells me that I am not being vigilant enough on the bug patrol, but really, what could I do that would work and not be a pesticide? There aren't enough of these berries to do an all out assault on the sow bugs that are having dessert in our garden. I will continue to buy my strawberries from the store, and let the bugs have mine.

It was all I could do to resist painting each and every seed on the surface. Nonetheless a slight carefulness reemerges. But what I am really happy about is the plate. It really looks like a white plate. Sigh. The fabric is a piece of my hand dyed cotton, which changes color and so that made it fun to paint.

And now for a little food fun. I made cornbread salad, which I believe now makes me a qualified Southerner.

We attended the Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburgh TN in April and had to try this stellar concoction. Crumbled cornbread, green onions, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers (I used chopped jalapenos) and crisp crumbled bacon. Toss together with Miracle Whip and Bacon Ranch dressing and chow down. Really good. Honest.

  4. Bonnie,
I hesitate to commit to a painting a day, but I know Painting-a-dayers don't always have 7 paintings a week. I am still in the practice mode, but have ordered some canvas panels to aid in getting serious.
It is just so thrilling to me to get a decent composition and to try and loosen up my brushwork.

  5. Melody,
The white plate was the thing I zeroed in on immediately. Great job on capturing the colour in the shadows , the depth of the plate, and the highlights on the rim.... impressive...

As for missing chunks... when that happens here...we blame the birds and put up netting. :-)

  6. Hmm - missing chunks - here in FL the mocking birds are eating our tomatoes!! Soooo much for more home made salsa. Love your new paintings!

And I noticed the plate right away too, it's the shadows from the stem and underneath the berries that is grand. I am no arteest but I like what I am seeing!!! And apparently you like what you are doing...thanks for the previews all the time.

squirrels, other rodents and even turtles may be taking the bites out of the strawberries. If you have enough strawberry plants, then you share with the wildlife and everyone gets to enjoy the fruit.

  9. Mel, that strawberry painting is TERRIFIC. Way to go. I can't keep my eyes off it.

I had cornbread salad at The Rusty Fork restaurant in Elkhorn City, KY, just outside the Breaks Interstate Park. Obviously, it was memorable.
